My xmas eve knife encounter

LOL. There's nothing wrong with stating that he was black. It's a fact that statisically you're more likely to be stabbed by a black man than any other race.

Anyone that cries "racist" doesn't have a clue what they are talking about.

It's also a fact that you're more likely to be stabbed by a man rather than a woman, a junkie rather than a doctor, a young person than an old person - but that doesn't mean that it's worth mentioning as if no-one out with those groups could possibly ever commit a similar crime.

It's not 'racist' to mention that he was black - but it does suggest that you think it has more of a bearing on the crime than other factors which can also be linked with a statistically increased likelihood of committing the crime (like being male, young, etc).

The reason I originally queried the 'I'm not racist..' statement, was not because I thought the OP was a racist, but just that bringing attention to the fact that the other guy was 'of a different race' had little bearing on what had happened, as this sort of aggressive behaviour is just too common in general, and not purely a problem of one particular section of society.

What's his colour got to do with it, unless you're generalising his actions to make a derogatory statement about a particular race in general? This sort of aggressive and threatening behaviour is unfortunately all too common in certain people of all races.

Sorry to hear you were threatened in this way though, can't have been nice, especially with your kids around.

It's more common amongst certain races and the facts back that up. It's not derogatory at all.

He says , Can you guess what colour he is? He could have been middle eastern , Asian, black white. Yet somehow everyone knew what colour he was talking about. Now was he racist in saying that or was the person who guessed it correctly?

You're probably right... I was merely jesting though :p

Ok, too many posts to quote bits from but to those who dis-believe the way it went down and the conversation i had with him. It is as true as i can recollect. I did call him 'sunshine', i did laugh when he said he'd stab me. The laugh was possibly borne out of nerves and shock seeing that he said he'd stab me after me saying its xmas eve and he aint gonna get anywhere. I don't really think he paid attention to what i was saying, he just wanted to threaten me and that was that, cos he just kept repeating himself and asking if i understood him.
By the time i said the sunshine remark and gestured to him to get back to his car, i'd closed the car and was in a safer position.
There's no bravado or bigging up of what happened, why would i do that? I don't know anyone on here personally, so its not like my ego is at stake. I could care less.
It was my 40th birthday yesterday and i was reflecting on my life and the experience popped back into my mind enough for me to post about it.

You can make of it what you will (lol, you usually do on GD anyway).
I know that's how the situation panned out. I also know i'm not racist, but i do have my prejudices. Right now i'm less endeared to black folk who threaten to stab people than i used to be. :p

I'll reiterate i do regret not informaing the police, but hey ho, what's done is done.
In hindisght, i don't believe he had a knife either. Or at least if he did, wasn't prepared to use it. He was going shopping to a stupidly busy retail park, possibly buying xmas pressies on xmas eve. He was probably aggitated at the traffic queue and didn't want any aggro from me after cutting me up, so nipped it in the bud by threatening me in that way. No excuse at all, but if he was out to stab someone, he'd clearly not thought his escape route through.

So there ya go.

He is trying to reinforce stereotypes -- and bad ones at that. He wants us all to roll our eyes or maybe have a go about 'black guys' as well as than 'people with knives'.

If I said 'Someone reversed their micra into my car today -- guess what sex that person was ..' or 'I met this incredibly dippy girl in the supermarket -- and guess what her hair colour was ...? '

That is sexism. As everyone knows the stereo-type and I'm trying to reinforce it.

It's basically a leading question. It's reinforcing a horrible stereo-type.

If I say 'I got mugged by a guy who, as to be expected, had an afro' -- that is racism. It's just disguised racism as I could just run and hide behind 'white people could have afro haircuts' any time I fancied ..

Had some similar happen to me, on Christmas Eve also. Popped into the local Asda to pick some stuff up and walked back to my car. Was just about to pull out the space as there were cars waiting and the car next to me started to pull out. I stopped and let him carry on muttering under breathe about something unrelated. Next thing, the car stops and he says something to me, as I can't hear him as I assumed that he asked me if I was leaving, he then said something else so I motioned that I can't hear him, handbrake goes on, seatbelt off and he walks over to me so I wind the window down.
Next thing I hear is "My daughter says you called me a ******." I told him I hadn't and that she must be mistaken. (I actually hadn't either) he asks me if I'm sure so I repeated what I said. He then walked off muttering and sped out of the car park. The bloke in one of the cars waiting for a spot stares at me, smiles and shakes his head in an incredulous way.

Crazy.

Put it this way, if a guy wearing a turban and acting shifty walks into a crowded airport and starts creating, you're more likely to fear for your life than some chav making a fuss in the same place, no? Its perception!

You do realise that muslims don't wear turbans?

Sound a bit ignorant rather than racist imo.

Still, that's no excuse for someone threatening to stab you.

ye but was he black?

I'm not racist, but maybe you can guess what colour he was.

I would guess he was black even before you wrote that line. I am also not racist in the slightest. Some of us are just realistic and not afraid to say that black people are much more likely to be involved with crime generally.

What difference does it make though? He was black, erm, wow?

Tbh you act pretty stupidly to a guy who pulled a knife on you. Especially considering your kids in the car and you're winding up a guy who threatened to slash you, and considering you're seated in a car the only thing you could have done to stop it was use your hands to cover your face.
