Why is halo good?

The map editor is pretty innovative, as is the video editor, and the sharing of game modes and edited maps is pretty innovative.

You can do that in other games though. I agree with the video editor in a way but people have been doing that in Fraps for years.

I think I was a bit unkind in my previous post about this game. I think my major beef with Halo is with it's presentation, which I think is poor, and the way that it's more of a social movement than a truly epic game.

The single player didn't stand out for me in the same way as when I played Modern Warfare, and although they are different types of games and can't be compared to in a lot of ways, you can compare their campaigns as a single player experience. For me Halo is very cartoony, but when in the campaign it tries to suck you in and immerse you but for me I could never get over the cartoony image.

I don't think the audio is the best I've heard in a game, the weapon noises sound quite weak but I do like the title music, it's very good. There is obviously something about the multiplayer I'm missing because so many other people enjoy it but for me it was tedious and boring. Simply getting into a game is a chore and there are so many playlists to choose from it makes it very daunting for a new comer. You play COD and you see Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch etc. That's quite simple to understand, it's a list of game modes and you just click on which one you want. With Halo I always seemed to be jumping through hoops and waiting around menu's more than I was actually playing.

Then you come to the Americans... "Mehhhhh I killed you faggot, you suck, you're a faggot, you're British so you must have bad teeth, oh go and drink some tea, brush your teeth..."

I don't mind banter and I'd be more than happy to dish out some American stereotypes on them but when you've got an opposite team full of little 14 year old Americans running around and teabagging everything in sight it just gets a bit too much. I know you get idiots in all games but Halo 3 seems to be where most of them reside when they aren't annoying the **** out of gamers who play other games.

As I said I must be missing something because to me it's a game that has sub par graphics, sub par sound effects, the multiplayer blatantly rips off Unreal Tournament and to newcomers the menu's are a confusing mess.

The multiplayer is barely anything like UT, and what other console games have a level editor like Halo? I can't think of any other game that lets you edit a level in multiplayer and then save and share the creation.

And Fraps is a pc program, therefor the video editor in halo 3 is an innovation on consoles. Especially as it automatically records every game (single and multi, as far as I can remember) and lets you save and share them at will.

Firstly I don't think I've seen a version of fraps for consoles and secondly there is a massive difference between showing someone a static video recording of a game and sharing the game from every possible vantage point at any possible time.

Some games like CS allow you to do it with demo recordings but halo automatically records every game for you and allows you to very easily share that with other people.

When I play other games like MW2 and BFBC I wish they had that feature.

It's personal choice, It's really your opinion about the audio as I've never really had a problem with it, graphics I'll give you, they're not the best but they do their job perfectly fine.

Rips off Unreal Tournament?! How so?

You have to remember though that regardless of what the graphics or sound are like people will still play it regardless if they enjoy it, think of all the people that still play CS or even Starcraft.

Halo is good but not great.
It was only rated as great because it was on a console and nothing else like it existed on a console.
To a PC gamer however it is nothing more then mediocre as the PC had/has many games that are far better.

It was rated as a console game, hence the 10/10

A bit like Gears of War.
Console - awesome game
PC- average game

OK, but why is it still rated 10/10 (halo 3). While games like lfd2 and modern warfare are rated lower?

This

Enjoyed the first Halo soley in multiplayer mode, didnt like SP much - its completely devoid of soul to me, really boring.

The 2nd continued this trend as did the 3rd.

How halo 3 got 10/10 I just dont know

Gears of War was average on PC due to the controls. Keyboard :/

With a 360 pad (which basically = 360) it's an awesome game.

My favourite FPS online is bad company, but I do applaud Halo 3. Watch any of my friends play splitscreen and they will suck at call of duty or other games but halo they can find themselves more easily. I believe Bungies philosphy is something like 'easy to pick up, hard to master'. It was statistically the most played game on live for 2009 and it offers a bundle of features for its fans like video replays, online stats etc. There is a good halo community, if you dont like the game its personal preference, but that doesnt mean it sucks. Maybe it didnt innovate that much - but whats wrong with releasing a solid gaming experience both on and offline?

The game modes on Halo are fun and from my experience people stick to the objectives more than the kills, especially compared to MW2. For example on oddball it will actually be about holding on to the skull for the longest, there wasnt much point in going around killing people randmly. Go on MW2 and play, lets say domination and its full of campers or people using jaked weapons solely to get killstreaks, not even stepping into capture a flag. Compare a good sniper on halo to one on MW2, one requires skill of aiming and moving, the other is just how good a camper you are as the auto aim seems to do the rest.

Sorry to compare, but to summarise Bungie have done well to create a solid game which has also created a still very active community. To the person complaining about Americans, thats not the games fault.

Again, yes everyone agrees it is solid. The question is why does it deserve 10/10 and not a simple 7/10?

Perhaps I'm too naive but I've never considered the fact marketing can affect review scores, but it has too right? I mean it's essential for microsoft to have their top game highly rated so no doubt some money gets thrown around to ensure that happens.

This review sums it up fairly well http://www.gamecritics.com/halo-3-review

Still that is the one 7/10 rating in a string of 9-10/10's on metacritic.

Halo is a solid 8-10/10 game on Console.

What you're struggling to do is seperate your bias. Halo doesnt hold up against the PC shooters you've played.

My opinion on the halo series is that its fun when played with friends, i enjoyed playing through all three at my friends house in co-op, plus a few decent multiplayer matches. but as soon as i played them by myself i slowly lost interest.

halo 3 was again ok when i played with a few friends over live, i think i played mid way through by myself and got bored, tried the multiplayer and then sold it.

Halo 3 was pretty good fun, but ODST i just wanted it to end as soon as possible.

What was the deal with having to run from area to area? Just boredom.

Just reminds me a generic console FPS, slow movement (to accomodate controller), slow enemies, mindless shooting of generic looking light bulb aliens, and absolutely no story, there are far better games released as mods than this turd. But then again, its about the console masses and their thirst for stuff that was done 10+ years ago on the PC.
