Why is halo good?

Just reminds me a generic console FPS, slow movement (to accomodate controller), slow enemies, mindless shooting of generic looking light bulb aliens, and absolutely no story, there are far better games released as mods than this turd. But then again, its about the console masses and their thirst for stuff that was done 10+ years ago on the PC.

Well...Out of all the post in this thread, Yours comes in at number 1 for being furthest from the truth :D

From what you said there, I'd guess you've not played it.

Slow movement? Slow Enemies? Mindless shooting? No story?

Played the original on the xbox, It was like you were on the moon, jumping and the walking was slow, the enemies waddled. At the time I was comparing it to the likes of Quake 3, UT, AvP2. The was little story from the 5-6 hours i played of it, and I did eventually get sick of shooting the same enemies over and over. I dont see how anyone could argue it wasnt slow?. Compared to modern shooters yes, its about normal, but fast paced games like HL2, DoD, AvP etc, are a thing of the past, which is sad, as it truly defined who was the better player.

Halo wasnt anything special to anyone that had been playing fps games on pc for years, but i guess it was different to a console audiance. It was abit poor afteryou get half way into the game, you turn round and go back through all the levels youve just done !

Halo was a better game with an actual story attached but progression was abit slow.

I dont think halo did anything particuarly new though. id completed Doom/QuakeII on PS1 years before (with mouse support no less!) and then there was Timesplitters on PS2 which im sure was before halo. red Faction was also a good storey driven game that played well on PS2. Redfaction 2 which if i remember right had keyboard/mouse support. although that was prolly well after halo.

So after all that, Halo wasnt particuarly great (id seen it all before) but it was ok for 1 playthough, just to say id played it.

I disagree, and had been gaming in PC clans at a decent level long before Halo, and have been since. When it comes to involved single player combat Halo continues to be leagues ahead of anything else i've played. Other than Golden Eye and Perfect Dark, I can't think of another single player fps that has offers as much challenge or scope for improvement. Games before and after Halo have been much better in nearly every other respect, but combat wise nearly all are lacking.

Halo is a game where you either love it or hate it, or so it seems with the vast majority of players out there. The reason why halo is rated so highly is mainly down to the original halo and the multiplayer aspect of halo2, both changed FPS on the x box and i believe it was the first to bring about matchmaking ? I could be wrong here so dont quote me. For me these are what made the first one epic

1. The enemies and the A.I at the time, they were fun, variety of enemies with greate dialogue.
2. Co-op, great fun spent completing this game on legendary with friends.
3. The weapons, unique different and awesome :)
4. The use of vehicles in the game which was just enough and not to much.
5. The soundtrack and story aswell as the way the story took you from scenario to scenario and blended so perfectly you never questioned the way the game progressed.

Despite all this i must admit the 3rd one and ODST are shocking lol

Halo 3 is a good game for many reasons.

Great soundtrack
Good graphics
Great campaign
Very competitive multiplayer
Good length

I didnt like the campaign in ODST, but firefight is awesome and it comes with all the halo 3 multiplayer maps so saves a few quid.

avp and avp2 - wow, loved them games :D
shame avp2 didnt pickup so much online, was hard to find decent publics after a few months :/

i remember the days.. going around to my mates house after high school with about 4 friends playing halo 2 multiplayer, the best one at the time i loved it. soon after i bought myself a 360 with halo3 and played online, i thought that was just as good but then like with all things got bored and havent played it since. i never played the latest efforts but from what i hear i dont think it would be worth wasting my time on.

I don't understand all this "by PC standards it was/is crap" i played PC games for years before Halo and still thought it was bloody fantastic, minus some of the indoor levels.

Same here. I've played most PC shooters before and since and Halo stands up to the best.

So as you can see I have played a fair number of FPS game (and this is only the list of games I remember playing I'm sure there is a hell of a lot more)

Halo ranks second from top of my list. And I unlike others on OcUK I don't have to publicly condemn the popular FPS games that I thought Meh about. I simply do not play them

For the record the Doom Series is my absolute favorite FPS series, nothing has nor will ever in my opinion out do Doom & Doom2 I own Doom 1 & 2 on just about every console I have ever owned (and some I haven't owned) and I had it on PC back in the day.

Halo 3 was pretty good fun, but ODST i just wanted it to end as soon as possible.

What was the deal with having to run from area to area? Just boredom.

Personally I really liked that aspect of the game, I felt it helped the pace of the game, you have your faster action orientated sections that are then broken up by coming back to this dark and sombre city with chilled music, I found it quite reflective.

Exactly the same here, I'm a mad Doom freak, I remember grabbing it day one on floppy disk, only just recently I played through ultimate Doom in opengl on my PC again, nothing compares to Doom/II level design, the 'classic' Doom franchise will always be my number one, and like you Halo is ranked just Below that and I've played just about every main stream fps PC game out since the original Wolfeinstein.
