How many gold fish will a fishtank hold

No, not by a long way. Are they fancy ones (big swishy tails) or normal ones?

Fancy goldfish you might be alright with a pair, regular goldfish will outgrow that tank in a few months.

Have you added the fish yet? If not, I'd be happy to recommend a couple of options if you go tropical.

If you have most fish shops will accept fish bag in exchange for credit, so you could use that towards either equipment, food or decholor.

the other 5 are just bog standard goldfish.
I will get the old tank out on Thursday and put the new ones in it.
 
If you dump 20 fish in there, nature will reach an equilibrium and provide you with the hardest minority. Do it with a number of tanks and you can breed an army.
 
@jaysus. I was just in the process of cycling a tank (about 4 weeks in), its going through a fish less cycle at the minute.

I've kept coldwater fish in the past but never tropical and I was thinking about setting this tank up as tropical, It's only a small tank, 5 gallons or so (to get me started). Was looking for something simple and easy to keep, a hardy fish so probably Danio's. I was also after a small bottom feeder something like corydoras.

What do you think, seem like sensible options? Or is there anything else to think of?

Good on ya for fishless cycling, its nice to see someone new to the hobby doing it that way.

As for the stocking, 5G is going to be a bit small for any flavour of danio - you're right, they are hardy but they're also very active and need a long tank - I'd feel unhappy putting them in anything less than a 3 foot tank.

You got the tank size in length x width x height? I'll post up a couple of stocking suggestions, and link in the relevant photo's/reading material if its any use to you.

The "1 inch per gallon" is the rule of thumb most often trotted out. Its not particularly accurate as theres a lot of variation between fish - some small fish such as danio's need a lot of length, some grow much bigger over time (common goldfish being one example, clown loaches another,) some are dominant and will bully others to death.

At risk of sounding like I'm lecturing, research is the key. Its worth spending a bit of time doing some digging (or going on a decent forum and getting someone to advise you) to know that when you set your tank up it should all go pretty smoothly.

Thanks for your help anyway I have got my old tank back out
and put 3 of the new goldfish into it. And in my new tank (10 gallons)
i have 1 large gold fish and 2 tiny ones will this be ok or do I need to go buy a bigger
tank on sat? If so what size?

The only thing with fishless cycles is having the patience :p But as said, I used to keep coldwater fish when I was younger and was really into it at the time, but its been a while, so I don feel like a bit of a novice again.

Any reading material would be really useful thanks :) Dimensions are roughly 15in x 10in x 12in.
 
Goldfish require around 10 US gallons per Fancy Goldfish, and about 15 US gallons per Common or Comet Goldfish.

Goldfish produce a huge amount of waste (they're always pooing!) so need much more water per fish than tropical fish do.

If you put them into a small amount of water (e.g. 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank) you will almost certainly stunt them so they don't grow properly. This will make them prone to disease and will more than likely shorten their lives considerably.

Sadly few first time fish keepers release this, and usually harm the fish by putting too many in too small a tank. I know i did when i first got fish.

to put it in persceptive I have 5 gold fish and 2 sterlets(well be moved to big pond when grown enough) in a 6ft x 4ft x 2ft pond with an over sized filter. I could maybe fit another 2-3 in there comfortably the goldfish i have are currently around 8-9" in length but it not uncommon for them to grow to 12" in length.
