Answering your work phone

I think introducing yourself before you launch into conversation is just a courteous thing to do, even if you have a clever phone which says who's calling.

And as for picking up the phone and saying your name, again a courteous thing to do. Plus, the majority of people in an office will answer someone else's phone if the intended recipient is out and it could relate to their team/work instead of leaving the phone ringing for minutes.

i tend to answer my mobile with 'what do you want'

someone once questioned me "why did you answer it like that, what if it hadnt been me?"

erm..... your name wouldn't have come up on my phone.....

Hi <Name> speaking.
> Oh hi <Name> it's <TheirName>.
Oh Hi. How about you grow a pair, come downstairs, and talk to me face to face?
XD

Noooo!! Never come down and interrupt us from eating, drinking coffee and surfing the 'net. ;)

If it's a problem, stick in a support request on the ticket system. If it's a critical issue that's stopping multiple people from working, or your PC is so dead you can't get to the support page, ring the emergency number that's on the barcode sticker with the asset number on the top of your PC (and the back of each of your screens and on the bottom of your keyboard) - that way it rings the entire department and flags the call to us as an emergency.
If it's just a "meh I CBA to put in a support ticket" then why have you singled out that member of the department? - they may be busy on something while the others are sat there twiddling their thumbs.

If it is in my department: Hello *their name*
Internal number, but outside of the department: Hello, *my name* speaking.

What's wrong with that? If they don't speak to you often they won't recognise the voice so maybe unsure who they are speaking to.

Answer with "Hi, it's Mark here, could I speak to Dave please?".

That normally does the trick.

I have to thank the caller for calling my company, state my name, and ask how I can help.

If it's an internal call it all depends on who the caller is.

"Hi, you're through to Mickey at card services. Can I take your name?"

about 30 times a day. I sometimes mix it up a little if I'm feeling bored.

Withheld or external number: "<Company Name>, <Christian Name> speaking"
Internal call or recognised number: "Hello", followed by "Hi" if they say "Hi <me>, it's <them>"

Is how I do it.

If I recognise the internal number - Hi xxxx

If I don't - Hello

If it's external - Hello Richard speaking (comes through reception)

If it's external and I pick up direct - Company Name
