I will buy them at whatever price you deem fair, as long as you allow me to either play VII in widescreen or at least pillarbox it so everything's not stretched out fat, and let me get Yuffie without the game crashing. Gamepad support would be nice, but I'll happily do without if it's not too much trouble.

+1.

With the way the OP is laid out, it's more appropriate on the Steam forums.

But anyways as it does bring up a good point, it would be interesting if Steam add bring those two games onto their service, especially seeing as Square-Enix is officially on there.

Widescreen support wouldn't really work as the games are too old, so all you will be getting is just a stretched image. Even then, surely these days modern graphics card and monitors have built-in scalable ratio adjustments anyways. As for gamepad support, well I have no problem with the good old Gravis Gamepad Pro or my PS2 pad via USB converter.

Even if the games do or do not come to Steam. doesn't really matter for me though as I already own the retail PC editions and PSOne Classic versions on the PS3 (Hopefully VIII will be on the PAL store soon).

The first half of that requires SE releasing it for Steam to sell, and the second half requires SE fixing a 12 year old game. It would be great if it did happen, but I don't want to asphyxiate from holding my breath ;)

I used to own the PC version of FF7, was so buggy at release and needed patching before it would even run in hardware mode :) Be nice if an updated one was on PC but it's probably to easier to just run via emu! (I still have my PSX FF8+FF9 discs which run great with some jiggery pokery)

For FF7 I make do with PS One ver on PSP :D (The 3rd time I had purchased FF7 ;))

I'd also love FF7 on steam, as it's a pain having to plug up the PS1 in order to play it.

I guess it may be possible to play the PS1 version with emulation, but this is a relative PITA compared to just double clicking a game in steam!

Yeah to be honest, the only decent thing about the PC versions is faster loading, ridiculously easy save game editing with hack/trainer programs and some nice custom modding (Assuming it all works well).

The major problems was of course getting to run in DirectX 3D Hardware Mode which is such a hit or miss especially on modern hardware and a few annoying game breaking crash giltches.

But worst of all, the music is crap unless you had a decent soundcard from Yamaha or managed to get the Yamaha SoftSynthesizer working properly, so you had to put up with the crappy generic MIDI music driver. I mean there are mods now to get the original PSOne quality music on there i.e, replacing with MP3's of the original soundtrack, but that itself is an annoyance as it is such a hassle and doesn't work all the time. The Sephiroth "One Winged Angel" track is missing the vocals regardless if you have a good soundcard or not.

Gamepad rumble was also missing in FFVIII and whilst not essential, it helps a lot for Squall's Gunblade weapon with the Trigger keypresses.

And yeah, emulation of the original PSOne version actually runs and looks a lot better, especially with a good PC and a couple of good graphics filters.

Unless something has drastically changed since i last played FFVIII, the only indicator you need as to when to 'trigger' the gunblade is the image of the weapon hitting the target... rumble would only help if you weren't actually looking at the tv, and even then you can HEAR when to press the trigger.

Agreed, as far as I recall the rumble only kicked in when the trigger kicked in. The time window took some real skill to miss, too. It was much harder to get the timing right on renzokuken, especially the custom combos on certain bosses, but I still couldn't play it with the indicator flashing about at the bottom of the screen.

Chocobo races aren't easy on the numpad, namely because the numpad pgup/pgdn are mapped to L1/R1 for stamina restore, and they're a pain to hold down while you're directing. I could just map them to different keys, but I've torn away in disgust after the repeated Yuffie crashes.

Would be nice, i guess they might get around to it one day. Recently played through 8 via an emulator and it was great fun. Gfx haven't aged to good, but you get past that quickly.

Oh, and i have a PS1 copy as well, just trying to justify using an emulator on the pc :)

It's the original PC version I'm playing at the moment - just doesn't support any recent windows or hardware very well. I never had FFVIII on PC, but I've got the original & platinum PSX versions knocking about here somewhere.
