Scots 'drink 46 bottles of vodka'

Is that it? Thats not exactly a large amount.
I drink a bottle of whisky a week, plus whatever parties/ pub/ nights out have on top.

52 bottles of voddy wouldn't be much. 1 a week? Thats only 2 doubles a day, thats just relaxing in front of the telly with a couple of bevvies territory.

how many idiots are there in this thread spouting rubbish like the above.

saying its a low figure and such.

do you know there are people who do not drink? there are people who only drink once a week. once a month. once a year, etc.

therefore that means that the people who actually do the drinking are drinking a hell of a lot more, its an average figure higher than any other country.

congratulations you drink more than 1 bottle of spirits a week, thats a really proud accomplishment. im sure it will serve you well in life. there are people who drink 3 litres of frosty jack (7.5%) every day as well as some cans of super strength lager, thats over 30 units a day, every day. doesnt make you look so cool now beaten by an alcoholic, shame on you. you must try harder.

I looked back at the OP link, and it states the Scottish figures is around 25% higher than England and Wales. Thats a significant difference, but to be quite honest I find even the E&W figure bafflingly high.

My own drinking habits are obviously the exception given these are average figures, but I never tend to drink at all a night before a workday. I just can't I know it would effect my performance in my job, headache/hangover or not, even a couple of beers has some effect the next day. I take a drink on a Friday and/or Saturday if I fancy it. Now I might have 5 or 6 tins of Guininess or else a bottle of wine on a Saturday (bingeing I know, and bad for me) but it doesn't remotely come close to the average. Even if I'd 2 heavy nights in a week I couldn't hit that average. Guess it comes with frequency as much as anything else.

Remember this is an average. There are a lot of English in Scotland working on the theft of the last of their oil before we cut them loose. Many Scots will be drinking far more than this.

Frankly, who could blame them ? If i were Scottish i'd want an escape too.

We drink so much because we have people like you as our neighbours!

No, I'm just messing. I don't drink much at all, a few nights a month if that and I know many people who are the same... though I know many people who are not!

So is this meant as a congratulatory thread to the Scots who are punching well above their weight here in terms of keeping the drinks industry flowing? If that's the case then well done guys and girls, I'm heartened to see that you're doing your bit for the British economy.

:p Makes you proud. I wonder what the majority of people drink then, because surely this average is brought down by non drinkers etc. I think I don't even drink 46x70cl bottles of vodka a year and as a uni student I go out binge drinking 1-2 times a week :O
I also wonder what the figures for ireland are :P.

I drink a bottle of spirits a week, I mentioned this to demonstate how little that was for the average person. It's not an alcholics figure.
Theres a difference to getting drunk every day and having a couple of drinks when you get home from work in the evening.
The people who don't drink are far outweighed by the 18-25 age group, a large amount of which will be on the booze every weekend.

It's high, we know scotland has a history of alcoholism and drug problems to it, but it's not as high as people are making out, it's not an epidemic as if all of scotland is comprised of alcoholics.

I think the point is, 1 bottle of spirits a week is nothing to get excited about.
The problem is that this Government has now managed to convince the media and simple people that we are binge drinking if we have more than 3 pints in any given session. What used to be called "a night on the lash" or "a couple with the lads" is now called "binge drinking" and as such is morally unacceptable. Personally, I'd rather they focused on the under age drinkers rather than adults exercising their right to have a few.
Just another example of the fascist nanny state that has ruled us for the last 12 years. The health fascists have finished with the smokers, now it's time for the drinkers.
Interestingly though, neither will be made illegal. Wonder why... tax? cough *ahem* hypocrisy.

They are trying to show a good impression to other Countries...not as if the Government actually care! Just some pretty little number for them to show instead of showing other more demanding problems in society.

Why aren't there figures for England and Wales?

There are. They are quoted in the link provided by the OP.

IIRC England and Wales sit at about 10th/11th in the table. Can't find the latest table online just now.

The cost of Alchohol to NHS Scotland (don't quote me on that) was thought to be about 2.5billion a year but they recon it is just over 3.5billion. For a country of 5 million that is a shocking amount.

I know its probably bad etc etc but me and the mrs normally have a bottle (70cl) of voddy a weekend, we are both in our early twenties though, no excuse however we usually have a good time and dont drink in the week.

Vodka is our choice drink, pref good brands...the cheapo stuff usually gives us a hangover

For Gods sake. Let's stop beating ourselves up over liking alcohol. It's like the Puritans are running the show again (maybe they are).
Look, when I go to my mates house there might be six of us sat around a table eating, chatting and drinking and we'll get through maybe 9 bottles of good quality vodka (Wyborowa or the like).
Guess what? I don't feel the need to drink Tennants Extra the next day on a park bench, I've paid plenty in tax and we had a good drunky poker night.

The problem is?

i dont think you guys understand.

IT IS AN AVERAGE PER ADULT.

that means take out all the people who dont drink. drink less often, etc. that means a lot of people will be drinking 2 - 3 bottles of spirits a week. remember it is against some religions to drink. pregnant women dont drink. if you add all these up then yes it is a problem.

im 24 years old and a student. i only drink about 12 bottles of spirits worth a year i would say. that means somebody else is drinking the other 34 bottles of spirits.

anybody who doesnt think having 2-3 beers "every" night isnt a problem is in denial. it is a problem all be it a small one.

a lot of people are binge drinking and it is a problem, especially in scotland, there are people murdered, knifed or assaulted every weekend in glasgow city centre at night when people are full of alcohol. if you dont think its a problem, why not speak to some of these people who have been assaulted or knifed, or speak to a police officer who deals with the problems created.

alcohol is a huge problem in scotland, you guys simply dont understand that these stats are an average, and a lot of people are drinking a full bottle of vodka every friday and saturday night, but then not drinking anything during the week.

my family owns shops, restaurants and a pub which all sell alcohol, i know first hand by the amount of times regulars come in and buy booze, how much of a problem it is.

all of the people saying that 1 bottle a week per adult is nothing need to grow up, if it is nothing then why is it 25% higher than england? all you english must drink like women. come on im sure you english can handle a lot more than 1 bottle per week, go out and show us how manly you are.

The problem is?

9 x 70 cl = 6.3 litres

6.3 litres divided by 6 = 1.05 litres each

you guys drink over 1 litre of vodka each in a night? and you dont think its a problem? lol
