Napoleon Total War currently £17.99 pre-order on the rainforest and their main competitor! Depending who you go with you get to unlock a special unit.

I skipped Empire total war but will take the plunge with this one! What are everyone's thought's? Worth getting?

And can someone advise which of the two pre-order bonus' would be best in their opinion/experience? I have initially gone for the one off the rainforest!

Part of me really wants to pre-order it now but the sensible part it cautious because I was never really able to properly play Empire:Total War because of the bugs. I really hope this one is more reliable. The AI not being able to properly attack via the water made Empires rather dull for most of the factions.

Yeah its a stand alone i think they have already released one expansion for the previous game. Huge fan of the series so hopefully this one is still as good as the previous ones (campaign wise)

Yep its a stand alone game.

After the debacle of E:TW I’m hoping this time CA will have bought out a proper game. Even now E:TW is from perfect but this game should be easier to balance as there are less factions and CA have been given more time to finish it (there were rumours that Sega forced CA to publish quickly last time to bolster their accounts for the financial year).

But for £17.99 i couldn’t resist though definitely not buying a special edition like last time. The feeling of being shafted still brings a pain to my rear.

Well that rumour sounds true to me, the game was definitely rushed. That said I did enjoy playing it.

welshdragon: I do. Sorry, I meant to send it to you but I forgot. I'll do it when I'm at home.

I agree, Borrish, they have definitely rushed this one out so the chances are that it will be as buggy on release as Empire was.
I'm a big fan of Total War games but will resist buying this one until I see some trustworthy reviews and people here saying it's good to go :)

Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me.

Slightly off-topic - Medieval 2 was my first taste of the total war series, and I found the battlefield AI pretty much broken. Did it improve with Empire at all, or are there any mods for the AI during battles?

I have not played Empire Total War, so know not of these bugs. Are they a deal breaker at £18?

Possibly. Empire was pretty much unplayable upon release because of various performance issues and crash bugs. It was pretty much impossible to finish a game because it was almost 100% certain that at some point your game would crash when you loaded it and you would have to start again. The AI was unable to attack islands so it was impossible to lose anything not connected to an enemy by land.

Most of these bugs were fixed, but the AI still leaves a lot to be desired.

I assume then (rather I hope) that hopefully this version won't launch with the same bugs as presumably it would built upon the latest version of the last's engine etc?

jeez how many versions of this game are there?

So far I have seen the steam version with Scots greys, Play do a version with Poz lancers and then a LE version with 2 additional sets of DLC units - neither of which include the scots greys.

This leads me to believe that within a month there will be at least 2 sets of DLC made available.

I think I will just pay £17.99 and then get all the DLC in a month or so for £1.99

I really hope they do not plan to start releasing extra units for £1.99 in an attempt to make some easy cash. It seems like such a cheap way to force fans into spending money to get the most out of the game. I guess everyone is desperate to rip people off now so it wouldnt suprise too much.

I'm sure they will. They'll probably release the pre-order bonus units separately like they did with Empires.

I'm eager for a demo to come out so I can give this a try. I really hope they have learnt a few lessons from Empires because I really want this game to be good.

Apparently they have been working on AI improvements for Napoleon TW. As it is on a smaller scale - just Europe and Northern Africa (or at least Egypt anyway) I'm hopeful it will be an improvement upon Empire (which I didn't really like) and not just a glorified expansion.
games.on.net: How has the AI improved since Empire?

Kieran: On two levels – the AI obviously works on the campaign level and the battle level as well. For everybody who is a little bit unsure about Empire’s AI, have a go at the latest patch if you haven’t yet had the chance, because you’ll find a massive difference, especially in the campaign AI’s aggression. That’s important because that level of AI is Napoleon’s absolute base line. On the campaign side, the level of aggression, the proper use of money and armies, the things you’re getting out of Empire 1.5 is the very least that Napoleon’s AI will be.

I was speaking earlier about how we branched that code off, and that’s basically where Napoleon’s code begins in terms of AI. On the campaign side, Napoleon also features a campaign AI director, which is kind of like a godfather of AIs. It sits above all the AI factions, whispering in their ears saying “you may want to do this, you may want to do that”, and promoting a more interesting game world.

On the battle level, the battlefield AI has had a lot of attention paid to it, especially in regards to things like sieges and indeed the open field battles as well. It’s now much better at flanking behaviours, it can commit to a plan much more readily and actually carry that plan through without being distracted, resulting in some of the milling behaviour that people may be familiar with from before. There’s been quite a lot of changes on the AI side to make sure we give players a much more robust and interesting experience.
Although as always grain of salt, this was the PR guy. - source Jan 10th
