Flu Jab yay or nay?

For some reason I was eligible to a swine flu jab because of my medication (it compromises my immune system), but I'm not able to get a seasonal flu jab. Confused me, and they couldn't give me a definitive answer as to why I couldn't have the seasonal one. Conspiracy theorists - put your tin foil hats on!
There are different categories of 'patients at risk' for seasonal flu jabs and the swine flu jab. Simplest example being armed forces are eligible for the latter but not the former.

I was offered it for free - I didn't take it.

So you'd rather have the flu?

I wouldn't, but then I keep myself healthy and take precautions before and after contracting a flu, if at all.

What precautions can you take before getting the flu? Anyway even if you are healthy why would you risk getting flu (and I mean the flu not a cold that people call flu) and be put on your back for days and then spend time recovering when you could get a jab that would stop it?

It's your body do what you think is best and don't just follow others, all you're going to get by asking is those who have had the jab telling you to get it and those haven't telling you not to.

And that will be what kills you.

What am I going to get, something I wouldn't have gotten with a crap immune system.

I'm pretty much safe against autoimmune disease, cross those off.
And I've not had flu/ cold/ anything much in years.

Last thing I got was either food poisoning or seriously bad arse and mouth reaction to a mcdonalds i was pretty much obligated to eat.

The fear with pandemic flu is that it will kill the young (20s), fit and healthy.

For instance, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercytokinemia but it's more general than that.

I was offered the swine flu jab and seasonal jabs each time due to having Crohn's, and so having a very compromised immune system. I refuse both though as I tend to think they can do more damage than good to your immune system. Another thing is that very healthy people are more likely to have the worst flu. As the worst symptoms are your own body's defences, if you have a weak immune system ironically you might get a lighter reaction. It's down to personal choice though really, I wouldn't tell anyone not to have it, but then again I choose not to myself.

As I said in the post below the one you quoted.

Read up on Cytokine storms and Spanish flu ;)....

Having a 'healthy' immune system is not a safety barrier against real flu (not a bloody cold which isn't flu:mad:) and in some cases can actually be a disadvantage. Saying that I'm asthmatic but it doesn't stop me from doing my best to keep my immune system in tip top shape.

I've had both jabs this year. The seasonal flu jab was fine, but the swine flu jab was horrible. I thought all was fine until I woke up next day and realised that my arms was aching like hell and I felt awful :( Few days later I was fine though :)

if you are at-risk have the seasonal one, it's got good evidence behind it.
swine flu is more a media phenomenon than a medical one - don't bother

Yeah I read an article earlier about the Council of Europe investigating the whole swine flu thing, some scientists are claiming that big pharma lobbied the WHO to declare a pandemic so they could make big money off vaccines.

Myself and all my collegues got the swine flu jab last november time. Everyone has a sore arm for about 2 days, and 2 or 3 after people felt a bit bleh for a day. Wouldn't say sick, or ill, just a bit of a feeling of bleh, which lasted maybe 12 hours or so.

No other ill effects. Good warm up for when dirty nasty bird flu mutates and comes to get us all.....
