More is better. Probably. When is week 4? We're at the end of the 4th week in the new year so I'm guessing that, but as these aren't for sale I'm a little confused.

When can we expect to see these on the shelves?

These are new chips that will be added to the range over the course of the year.

At least they plan to launch a lower price gulftown part. Also some bad news it looks like Sandy bridge parts will start of in the mainstream with performance and extreme parts coming later.

Hi

I take it Core i7-970 is high end version 6 core gulftown chip that everyone has been talking about???

I thought the gulftown chip was supposed to have a name of Intel i9 Core or i7 980X???

Thanks for responding.

Nope this i7-970 is a lower cost 6 core gulftown that sits directly below the i7-980X in the range. (or will do when it is released in Q3)

I guess if this information is correct, it will make a lot of i7 users happy knowing thay can get a lower cost version of gulftown than the extreme edition that's to be released.

I wonder what the price will be for the lower 6 core gulftown chip is going to be???

So,

The Extreme Edition of Intel's 6 core gulftown will be released first, I think in another 2-3 months time??? then the lower cost version in Q3???

Yes according to this new roadmap, but Q3 is a long way away so things may change between now and then. Maybe AMD will force Intels hand making them release more lower end gulftowns.

What is clear is that Performance Sandy bridge is still along way away, the mainstream version called cougar point (uses socket H2 LGA1155) is very similar to the current Lynnfield/Clarkdale setup.

Question...

I know that most existing X58 Motherboards will support gulftown with a bios update but does anyone know whether there will also be some new Motherboards released around about the Intel's 6 core gulftown release time with full support for gulftown in the box???

Thanks for responding.

i thought the general opinion was it would be a new socket for the 6core intel cpus.

amd 6 core cpus however should work in am3 boards that use the latest chipset

If true, the core i7 930 will probably be the last quad core released at the high end, from now on it will be hex cores. I guess it will give more purpose to the 800 series on P55 if you want a quad.
