If you were feeling malicious at work, what's the most damage you could do?

Hmm.. I could take down all of our websites, take down all our servers, take down all computers in the office, take down all employees' laptops and erase all backups too.

So yeah, pretty much destroy the company .

Well I work in a hospital and have legitimate access to almost every room, so I'd imagine the damage could be huge...

I have no doubt anyone here could casue about as much damage as they make out, but I think those companies would have some kind of control in place and if not I think they'd have some kind of damage limitation in place.
Who do you think plans, implements and tests the damage limitation measures? ;)

Long term, we're fairly bulletproof, but in the short term, I could nuke all local data and destroy the physical boxes, delaying recovery from the off-site tapes by several days, if not weeks.

If I'm feeling really malicious I can easily cause misery for thousands of train passengers in London by 'forgetting' to lift straps, change point settings seeing that I have full access to any NWR infrastructure in the country, no questions asked, throw up PLB's without a possession on a very busy track, change signal points so trains stop or go through them when they shouldn't possibly causing fatalities. I mean, I'll most likely be fired, arrested and taking to court, but hey, at least I proved how much damage I can cause :p

With some planning and perhaps some partners in crime (literally) could do various things like obtain card holder data of some 60 million credit card users, distrupt the card payments infrastructure and operations of various household name retail banks and perhaps undermine confidence in the whole global payments industry which have implications for consumer confidence etc

On my own, and with no planning bash an emergency power off button that will cause the whole DC to go off causing fines of £40 grand a second.

Clearly not going to do anything of the sort of course.

Quite a few people in here seem to think quite highly of their role in their place of work.

Oh yes I could, quite easily :) ... most of the checks are procedural to cover the company / ourselves against mistakes ... i.e. proper planning etc ... but if you were going there for the purpose of mischief then you would not be following those anyway. The same level of access to do my job, and quite a few of the same commands even, could be used to screw things up.

Part of what I do is have to think about how to protect against this which is worrying at times, (I have had had a team leader in the past who got a bit panicky when several of us senior guys were sitting around discussing how we would bring down an estate of servers we were looking after and make it difficult to bring them back in a reasonable time frame)

Pop a main fuse on a property lol. Possibly cause somewhere to burn down (would take some time!) Give someone a possibly fatal electric shock.

Not a lot then lol

Just remember everyone, the first rule about Fight Club is..... :p

I think it's possible for any employee to destroy a company if they tried.

Umm, worst case scenario take out a few airliners over central London? It doesn't bare thinking about and god knows I've unintentionally tried a few times :p

Would non of the other ATCs/supervisors/computers notice what you where doing though?

Possibly but not likely til it was too late. We have enough close calls when people are trying to keep them apart, never mind if they were trying to stick them together!

Which airport do you work at? I'll make a point of avoiding it :P

I don't and don't worry, I've no intentions of doing anything like that no matter how bad a day :p

The people who work with your water supply, that's who you have to worry about...
