Aussie to UK - looking for some advice?

Don't get me wrong , I love darwin been here for over 6 months , its awesome but I was just highlighting not everything is better over here, hence highlighting the racism.

Where abouts are you going to be mainly based? NW is a big place:p

Karratha aka middle of nowhere. Its near Dampier. Im working there building an LNG plant. Im only doing it for the money, but some of my good friends will be there too so its not all bad.
Luckily, I get 2 weeks off every 8 weeks so Im going to have a good chance to explore the rest of Australia :)

Going to make a contentious post here , but i'd hit the west coast for sighhts and expreinces ahead the GBR or the dreaded gold coast.

Coral Bay , shark bay , karajini national park etc etc.

I'll butt out now as i'm derailing the OP.

enjoy Australia its a good place

England is a gorgeous country, with a rich cultural heritage. I can certainly see why you would want to come here. The quaint book shops, and great book festivals, plays etc are all nice. Though Aus does have an immense amount of natural beauty it lacks the historical grounding of the UK.

Though there are bad parts to this country; like chavs, knife stabbings, violent crime (highest in EU per population?) and a fair amount of discontent, you can be in a central hub to travel around the EU like others have mentioned, and also have good quality of a rich cultural life by the many things that are around. The train service is good now, £30 adv booking gets you from London to Manchester where you can have a cheap night out, or a few quid more and you can have a wonderful hike around Scotland.

There seriously is so much for you to enjoy, you just need to get out there! With you background in government I suggest you check council websites for various postings, and find out if any of your buddies at work have links with government bodies in the UK. If they do make a straight application via their reccomendation and you can be here in no time. I would suggest you rent a house for a year, see if you like where you live then lay down the cash to buy. You don't want to be buying a house in an area that you begin to hate.

I'm trying to look at the pro UK posts objectively here but for me the UK has nothing to offer me. (well it probably does but I can't see the wood from the trees as its been the "norm" since I was born)

I don't want to charge home from work in the dark, close the curtains and put on jumper because its cold, wet and windy,

As Fox says, UK weather is just so bloody "meh"
I don't care about the countries heritage. I just want somewhere nice to live and work.

Seriously, why? I can't think of much about the UK that is superior to Australia bar perhaps the fact we dont get nicked for speeding all the time but thats hardly a reason to move here. Surely you must realise what a fantastic country you live in - coming over here with £130k for a house is going to get you a miserable place really!

If only we could swap Passports, I cant wait to go back out there :p

i agree stay there its depressing in the uk
but hey its your choice dude

I guess a lot of it depends on what interests you as to whether you'll prefer the country or not.

There are lots of things that are fantastic about the UK - the history is one, quaint book shops as mentioned, etc etc.

But personally I prefer outstanding scenery, empty roads, open spaces and a feeling of hugeness to a quaint bookshop or having tea and scones in Stratford Upon Avon.

Really am playing devils advocate here , but.... How about swapping your 5mb + internet connection with generous limits if any for $A80 for a 2.5 MB line with a 16 Gb limit on it......

I know its a little thing , but its the little things you take for granted that are forgotten.

I currently have a 1.5mbit internet connection, which is shakey at best, with a 20gb peak time limit and I'm unable to get anything better because of where I live.

So yea, sure, I'll swap that :)

This shaky connection costing you 45 - 50 GBP a month? ;)

Whats your off peak limit ? 16 GB is it for me , no peak or off peak , due to Telstra having the monopoly :(

No because I'd hazard a guess we wouldn't be sat here typing on Overclockers, we'd be out organising a BBQ or doing a spot of surfing. :p

sorry I've been busy - cutting down trees mostly dead trees around my house - I live in a bushfire area

thanks anyway - I think you and the rellies have managed to talk us out of it...........................
when we think about the space we have, and our current house and the fact we have ok jobs etc etc, we probably would be worse off financially if we came to live in the UK, but that wasn't the only reason for thinking about the move

its a shame because we both liked the idea of different lifestyles and different jobs and being able to see loads of Europe on the weekend

I'm going to look up some of the areas you guys mentioned though and do a bit more research, see how I go

cheers

Jason

I dunno, what's wrong with taking a bit of a risk and doing some adventuring? Why not come to live and work here for a while? It might be fun, it might not be, how will you know without trying? :)

I would agree with some on this thread who suggest you rent out your place at home, then rent in the UK. Saves you a lot of mess and admin, and less stress if say your boiler or roof goes here in the UK - just ring the landlord, innit!

I am a half Swede - Sweden is a BEAUTIFUL place with lots of open space and friendly people, stable weather (wonderful summers, oh yes), and ace parental leave... BUT I am still very patriotic and happy to be living in the UK.

I live in Bristol as I have since starting here as a student in 2002, and I keep discovering new things in the place. It's a small city BUT unusually for a city in the south it doesn't feel it owes anything to London and has it's own feel. Recently someone described it as "a city of subcultures" and it's pretty much true - whatever you're into in your spare time, you'll find it here in abundance and will be doing your thing alongside thousands of people doing their own incredibly different things. You'll be unaware of how much is going on until you really open your eyes and ears...

Ehn, I loves it. Of course it has its downsides too, but doesn't everywhere?

I can't really afford to rent out my place at home - the rent wouldn't fully cover the mortgage, so I would have to find money to pay the difference in Australia plus rent a place in the UK...................

would be too much strain I reckon

I agree, always good to try something new - I guess everyone gets bored and can complain about all the negative things in a country they've spent most their life in.

I do like living in the UK , have lived here pretty much all my life - but I think time to try somewhere new. May even end up back in the UK in a couple of years time :p

My first thought also was why would you want to come over here. Obvioulsy you are more than welcolme but why....

I spent 3 months in Australia and although i couldn't live there permanently, well it is substantially different from the majoity of Britian, i think though as has been said that Edinburgh could be a good choice for you.

Getting across the channel isn't like catching the bus, not many people actually do this.

Indeed, cost puts paid to it mostly. Many Australians think nothing of driving huge distances but over here you'll soon get bored of driving huge distances to 'see Europe' at £1.20 a litre for fuel and even flights are not THAT cheap.

yeah I guess it is a case of the grass being greener, change in lifestyle and direction etc etc
I thought everyone went across the channel on the weekend :)

I live in Adelaide which, in comparison to other places, is nice and quiet but I've been here my whole life
I've been to most other cities in Australia, and the thought of relocating there doesn't really have much appeal as it would be sort of the same as Adelaide just a bit bigger and a bit noisier or a bit more humid
its still Australia (to me) after all
I love it, just a change is nice sometimes too
leave the comfort zone I guess
