Aussie to UK - looking for some advice?

Personally if I was the op I would do what my Sister is planning and rent out the house in Oz, come over here and stop with relatives, get a feel for the place then make a decision.

That's a good idea and probably what I would do.
I think you need to come over here for a good few months and travel the place before you make a decision.
There are some bad areas and some really stunning areas to live in this country. I'd recommend the South West if you're looking for a less hectic more laid back life, it's got some really nice beaches, stunning countryside and some big towns/small cities so you can get pretty much everything you'd really need.
The South East is certainly more busy and expensive but it's easier to find jobs.

Think i'm going travelling this year and can't wait to get to Aus (kinda hope I get sponsored and never have to come back :p), America first though for 4 months :D When are you going back Fox?

Next year probably - going to go to Perth and drive to Adelaide. This year my girlfriend can only get 2 weeks off at a time so it's America.

The Glastonbury area is nice as long as you avoid Glastonbury itself (I live in Street BTW which is 1 mile down the road across the River Brue).

Pilton is ok although there isn't really anything there, you also have the issue of the Glastonbury festival every year (fine if you want to go, not so much if you don't).

For £130k you will struggle to get anything more than a 2 bed flat as house prices have stayed relatively stable in this area. Moving 15 miles south to Yeovil (and the surrounding area) can get you a little more for your money although you will still likely struggle beyond flats.

The local government is run by (in this area at least) Mendip District council not the church. They are ok although decidely slow sorting anything out.

If you want to know anymore about the area (including specifics) drop me a mail in trust if you like. I will be more than happy to help you. :)

Somerset is fairly pleasant - nothing spectacular its pretty much mild and moderate in every regard, weather, pace of life, crime, etc.

Yeovil isn't too bad a place to live, fast and regular rail and bus links to London, Bristol, etc. lots of reasonable 1-2 bedroom flats around that price and a few semi-detached houses. It can be a little boring but you can get to some great places within 30-60 minutes travel.

Dear OP...

Are you MAD???

moving from Aus to the UK, thats the worst thing to do ever..

Its so crap here in the UK, weather, jobs, everything. seriously...

Then sod off to Aus and stop moaning, good god I can't stand people that are so negative about their own country which frankly is a damn good place to live. We recently had two friends from Melbourne return home after living here for 4 years in Edinburgh and they were gutted to be going.

Am I the only person who doesnt have any desire to go to Australia? Weather is too hot, costs even more to live than it does here and they have mahoosive spiders :p
I'll stick to the UK thanks :)

I'm sure he's had enough of the "OMG BROKEN BRITAIN!!1111" posts now, let's save the thread for the actual advice he's asking for?

Personally I'd like to live around Richmond/Twickenham or Windsor (I live near enough there now) if I had the choice. Good links to London and easy access to Heathrow plus lots of decent bars/restaurants, river etc.

Richmond & Twickenham are indeed nice, but not with £130K as your budget.

I'm currently saving a deposit with the aim of buying somewhere around here in the next year or two and I'm working on the theory that I won't get any reasonable 2 bed house for under £400K.

I have never been to Aus and it really wouldnt be one of the places that is a priority for me to go to, but I am going there this year as the wife wants to see her sister and we will stay with them as a base to see other things so it will be relatively cheap.

If it wasnt for her sister, I couldnt care less if I didnt go there until I exhausted all the other places I want to see that have a more different culture.

Stoke on Trent is probably the best place you could live. It's one of the nicest places in the country with the friendliest people, good value house prices, nice countryside, OCUK, and the best football club in the world. :)

If you're going to live outside of a city, live in Cornwall as it's by far the best county for 'outside a city' living.

I know the post is a joke but it isn't the easiest of counties to find a job in though from what I understand and you're also going to have to put up with all the weird Cornish idioms. Also got to watch out for the Cornish seperatists, I'm not quite sure what they do to make their point, withhold their delicious pastys? :p

If you're going to live in a city, live in London as it's by far the best city for 'inside a city' living.

There's a good argument that it's just too big for a city, as I said I may be biased but I reckon Edinburgh's a much better size. For a start you don't need to rely on getting trains/buses to almost anywhere and it doesn't take the better part of 3 hours to cross from one side to the other if you drive it.

Tommorrow indicates 28-32c in Melbourne, Adelade and Sydney :)

Way too warm, anything much over 20C is a bit on the hot side.

You can have my house (don't currently own one but I do share a room with 3 other guys, you are welcome to stay there), my job, my car and all my personal belongings. And I'll move in your place.

Deal?

You must live in a dump then?

QQuite the opposite here, we actually have weather if you notice? Summer = check, winter = check. Who wants Christmas in the blazing summer sun? Not me! The jobs are you serious? We have much better skilled jobs here and they pay better too. Come out to the country not some town in the city and its a different world. If everything is so better why don’t you move? Better off without people who moan like yourself bringing this county down.

Good look in the UK move, it’s a wonderful county with full of culture and history :)

For the love of all thats good in the world WHY would you want to move from Aussie to bloody Britain? Especially considering the bleak future ahead for this "multi-culturalism is great" brainwashed, EU had, offense taking **** hole of a place.

:p

Yes I am moving in a few years (in before the GTFO! replies.)

I just want to counter all the "zomg don't come to the UK it's rubbish!" posts. I live in an area of london where there are quite a lot of aussies and it's an awesome place. Don't know why people complain about the weather - it's easily hot enough in london in summer. You don't want to be sweating the moment you leave the door. Obviously the quality of life in different areas can vary significantly but that's why you do your research (although £130k does sound rather low).

We have great culture (our music and literature are popular everywhere), good sport, interesting history and despite the recession, good work opportunities compared with many countries.
