PS3 Dolby Headphone

Can you get an amp for the headphones with opticial in?

Just wondering if avoiding dolby headphone tech might be a cheaper option just give my headphones more umph problem is PS3 only has optical out so I use my headphones plugged into my monitor and the ps3 sends sound over hdmi lead.

Intriguing to say the least. So where's best to buy this ting?

I have a nice (but old) pair of sony headphones, will they do the job? No idea what the quality is like compared to others but they seem a nice pair.

Does this compare in any way to proper surround sound, not expecting miracles but does it give that same sort of feelings?

Bleh , I wish I could justify spending some pennies on an Astro Mixamp , but considering I got my HD555's for £50 from MM , it seems a bit silly paying £100 for a mixamp :(

Anyone got a cheaper alternative which still provides sound "positioning" ? :p

I'm pretty sure the A40 amp can only be got direct from Astro.

They've got a UK site that you can get the Mk1 amp from here. http://www.astrogaming.co.uk/

The US site sells the Mk2 if you wanted to import it though. http://www.astrogaming.com/

As far as I know, the sound output quality is the same, and the only major difference you don't need an adapter to get the Mk2 to work with the voice comms on the PS3, otherwise with the Mk1 you'll need one of these.

Any set of stereo headphones will work. The higher the quality of the headphones the better obviously, but I can't see why the surround effect would be lessened. :)

As far as headphones go, Dolby Headphone sounds massively better than a 5.1 surround set in my opinion.

As far as my understanding of it goes, because you've only got two ears, you only need two speakers in your headphones. These 5.1 gaming sets have six tiny speakers crammed into them, making the quality of sound worse.

By using the Dolby headphone effect (effecting which ear, hears what, when), you make your ears believe that they're hearing surround sound even with just two speakers.

Agree with everything orderoftheflame said. I've seen the mark 2 and its exactly the same...just with cheaper style knobs on it. sounds exactly the same though.

IMO the 3D postioning is better then any 5:1 set-up I've ever heard and i've heard some very good ones.

Ha seems I've made other people potentially split with their money after asking these questions it all sounds great but like someone said it just seems a lot of money headphones were £70 but the little amp is £100 but hey isn't most things in life back to front - wonder why there are only like 2 devices on the market though that do this kinda thing (im talking amp wise - i know the dolby headphone site links a few headsets as well). Just one other question (yea right) if you buy a set of speakers that has an amp does that amp also boost the headphones if you plug into the amp headphone socket rather than through the monitor?

The reviews on that A40 amp are good, really want to get one and i know it would have a big effect, but factor in the headphones and i'll be spending £150+ :(

Just as an alternative

Pretty good headset does the same as the A40, seperate audio volume for chat and game, works on 360, ps3 and pc.

Hate to correct you, but it doesn't do the same as the Astro A40 set. :)

That's one of these "True 5.1" sets with several terrible tiny speakers crammed into each can.

All that does is take a 5.1 output and play it as though it where a full surround set-up for a room, which tends not to work well with headphones.

The Dolby Headphone technology that we're mainly discussing in the thread eliminates the need to use small speakers by tricking the ears into hearing surround sound while only using a stereo set.

If I was to get the Astro Mixamp I would just plug it into the ps3 via usb and then connect the sound cable form the ps3 to the Mixamp ? and then plug in my headphones ?

Is that correct?

Yes, but you wouldn't be able to use it as a communication headset with the PS3, you'd only get the surround sound output from the game.

You'd either need an adapter if you get the Mk1 amp, or the Mk2 amp if you wanted that. :)

Thanks for the info..

Where would I connect the adapter ?

Does this have a passthrough so if I wanted the sound to go to an amp (Z5400s) I could via optical, but when I want to use headphones with the 5.1 effect I could just plug in without any issues.

Im guessing no and Id have to move the optical cable coming out of the PS3...

Does this amp does that then? Soz didnt see a reply

Am interested in this but dont want to do cable swapping when I want to hear a BD on 5.1 and then use my headphones for games...

With the adapter that Astro sell, you plug it into a PS3 USB port, then you can just go from the mic port on the MixAmp to to the red port, and one of the communication ports on the front to the green port. If you buy the amp you'll get all of the cables you need apart from the actual adapter.

It doesn't I'm afraid, but all I use to change between speakers and the MixAmp is a standard toslink switch/splitter though. :)
