had a tooth out . aghh

Had a decaying nerve dragged out of the canal which was agony. Also had an abscess that made my face swell up and I couldn't eat/drink so had to go to hospital :(

I had a nerve pulled out and can agree it hurts like hell, I had the choice of root canal, or to have the tooth removed and have a bridge fitted.. I opted for the second choice.

There is a reason why your tooth had to be removed and whilst it cracked, given the circumstance of the tooth in the first place is it REALLY such a suprise that happened?

It should have been removed before having a root canal though, the guy said she should have just gotten rid of it because it was way to far gone.

I'm still missing a tooth at the back of my mouth, she never said anything about getting a false one.

Having a tooth out pales into insignificance compared to a vasectomy, trust me i've had both and I know which one i'd never go back and have done again (though technically I shouldn't need to) :)

Ive had a tooh out (back one) and omg it hurt, and it hurts like hell now, it was a good 20 mins of tugging at it and my god. isnt it about time they made dentists friendly and not hurt, if they can cut arms off and crap now without to much trouble, then why is a tooth so hard.!

NHS dentist much? :(

:/ Sounds like a dodgy dentist. They are meant to push hard and it should release pretty easily. A lot of dentists seem to make the mistake of focusing on pulling the tooth which just causes trauma to the gums.

you ******** im going to the dentist this afternoon, final attempt of staving off root canal work on one molar.

You think having teeth removed is unpleasant? Try having new ones added! Dental implants aren't enjoyable, admittadly not much pain due to the anaesthetic but drilling out the bone to fit the implant post near your nose is awful.

I never have had too much pain at the dentists, not that I've ever had anything super major.

What I hate most is the noise the different drills make, constantly bracing myself for unbearable pain!

Just got an abscess the other day on my lower gum behind a wisdom tooth, my brother had the same wisdom tooth out the other year and they chipped a chunk of bone off his jaw getting it out, he had a face like the elephant man for days. Mines hurting like hell but gonna try and ride it through for a couple of weeks with pain killers rather than take a visit to the butchers.

One tooth out and a little pain. Just wait until you have some that are growing into your jaw bone taken out under general anaesthetic. ;)

Don't worry about it, as long as your dentist is good you have nothing to worry about.

I had the same as you are about to over a year ago, it was a really deep filling to hopefully avoid a root treatment...I had a temporary filling that was filled with cloves(!) for a few weeks to try and kill any bacteria in there, that was followed by a deep filling.

It was never right though, whenever I bit down hardish, eating crusty bread etc., on that tooth it gave me nerve pain. Finally when I went for a checkup a couple of weeks ago the dentist (a new dentist) said I would require a root treatment.

Cue lots of panicking and researching what's involved on my part...I had a 40 minute appointment two weeks ago, she drilled it all out, gave it an x-ray and said that though the nerves have died the blood vessal at the bottom of the tooth is still active so she packed it and put another temporay filling over it.

To mask the pain as it was tender afterwards (didn't feel a thing at the time, superb local) I got a box of co-codimol from the docs (though I probably could have got them from the dentist as well), really strong ones, 30mg codone, 500mg paracetamol...took them until two days ago when I realised that biting on the tooth doesn't really hurt anymore, I can hardly feel it now!

So for the first time in my life I'm looking forward to going to the dentist tomorrow to finish it off, drill out the temporary filling, file the nerve channels down a bit more, put a rubbery substance into it to fill the holes and have a filling over the top. Should last for years apparently and be pain free. :)

Unfortunately it *will* require a crown down the line, where they have to drill it all out again and put a peg down there to hold the crown in place but hopefully not for a decade or so.

So don't worry! ;) :D

(I'll tell you tomorrow afternoon how the rest of it went!)

yar, its actually my 9th time since Oct, This tooth has history, it was picked up about 4 years ago when I had an xray (it had formed a cavity inside the tooth with no opening, think pie crust). it was deep filled then but seems to have flared up the last few months.

Like you the first one was clove oil and temp. followed by a real filling. That worked for 4 weeks then it was painful again, so next we tried a steroid (swap i guess) and a temp. followed by a real filling.

Again this lasted 4 weeks before flaring up again so now its last chance saloon, had an antibiotic (swab again, i guess) put in and temp filling. Today is the real filling.

If this fails he needs to kill it, it the pulp thats the problem for me, theres no abscess at all. Its nice to know RC work is ok though.

How much did it cost though?

I have a habbit of chewing on one side now I'm missing a tooth and it's killing my jaw, I could really do with having one put in.

Well I had the rest of my root treatment today...they excavated the rest of the tooth, filed away the last of the nerve and filled it with a rubbery substance.

What they didn't tell me (and what I didn't read in research) is that they use what sounds like a bunsen burner to heat up a metal rod to shrink the rubber into place, as the dentist said "you will smell burning but don't worry it's only the rubber :eek::eek:.

True to form though, it was all fine, the only pain I felt through the whole thing (which lasted about 20 minutes) was when they put that dratted metal ring round the tooth to isolate it, that *always* hurts, no matter how numbed you are...they called it a something matrix I think.

Anyway, I had painkillers eight hours ago, they must have worn off by now, and I don't feel much apart from slight tenderness...a successful result I think!

If you have a good dentist that you trust I wouldn't worry about it at all, I was really surprised and very relieved!

Fingers crossed for you that it's healed itself in four weeks!

It doesn’t hurt one bit you big girls blows!!!!

I had 5 out yes 5 at the back, 3 in one sitting and the other 2 a couple of weeks later. The worst part is not being able to eat and talk for a few days due to a bloody mouth, and if you dislodge the blood clot = serious dry socket. Which I’m told is the worst pain imaginable lucky I didn’t have this.

All free too on the NHS
