How disappointing have you found the internet.

The internet is brilliant. Without it I wouldn't be going to Thailand later this year because I would not have as much information about the place. With it I can plan so much.
Not only that, but it helped me a lot during college.
The internet is only boring if you do the same things all the time.

The really really big problem with the internet is it's anonymity.

It turns a lot of people into idiots -- whether they're on forums, in games, or anything else they can interact with.

If you were in real life playing cricket with a load of strangers one hot Sunday afternoon and one says 'OMG You failz fag learn to bat noob lolol' - and another one switched the ball so he's blatently cheating, you'd hit them with the bat, break their respective young noses, and they wouldn't do it again. It's called 'society'. On t'net we just have to put up with all the rubbish so the kiddies keep doing it and not learning a thing about respect.

First thing when I'm Prime Minister I'd ban is the anonymity of it all ..

That's a very good 1000th post and I do hope you become a pimp minister very soon, removing anonymity would be awesome.

I think the internet is the most important innovation in my lifetime, in terms of revolutionising people's lives. The instantaneous access to such vast amounts of information has made an immeasurable difference to lives, and especially to education.

..

Agreed (minus the violence).

I love the net but it really does bring out the worst in people at times.

Internet changed a lot of things in a good way, such as communication, entertainment and learning... It's amazing how much information you can find over the internet...
The only thing that disappoints me about the internet are child pornography, some sites that encourages terrorism, fascism and all other kinds of bad things...

But the pro's outnumber the con's.

It's a fantastic research tool, but at the same time it's a massive distraction. A bit like a library with a sexy pole dancer in the middle.

I like this. It's a lovely summary of the benefits and drawbacks of using the net to do a lot of my work.

I hope you don't mind if I "borrow" this phrase for use in general conversation. Because I'm going to.

I may even pass it off as my own. Sorry. But then for all I know that's what you did as well ;)

The internet is one of the greatest achievements so far. People have more access to knowledge than ever before and this can only be good. If you have an idea and want to immediately follow it up and check out some facts while it's still fresh in your head it's a great tool.

I will agree that the internet can bring out the worst in people though.

All I would say is:

Anyone who has a web-enabled mobile phone has the majority of the world's knowledge at their fingertips anywhere they can get reception.

That is so 2010.

Pretty much, the thing is it evolves slowly so we don't always see it as this radical amazing thing that it is, but you think back say 10 years and if somebody had told us millions of people would be carrying around glass fronted touch screen panels in there pockets that you would be able to use to shop, bank, surf the web etc most people would think that you was a Star Trek geek or something :D, it really is amazing when you think about, in many aspects we are living yesterdays dream.

I love that people the world over can all be part of the same joke (internet memes).

I love that a group of people can overthrow the 'usual' number 1 at Christmas with an old, sweary, angry rock tune (I don't care if all the money went to Sony or if it helped the X-Factor tune get more sales in the race - it's still cool that it happened).

I love that I am actively in touch with friends all over the country and all over the world who I might not otherwise hear from on such a regular basis (facebook, et cetera).

The only bad thing about people having such a useful information-filled device in their pockets is cheating in pub quizzes tbh!
