This is the reason I will never go multi GPU

"Nvidia has recently launched the latest version of its Geforce graphics driver, now in 196.21 with WHQL certification, which among other things brings SLI support to Dirt 2."

Not having a pop at Nvidia, ATI are just the same.

No matter how good the performance you will always get games that dont use it out of the box so are back to single card performance for twice the price.

I have rarely had to wait for SLI support from nVidia and the few times it has happened its even rarer that I can't manage atleast a +50% increase using nHancer until proper profiles are released or get it working fine just forcing AFR.

I might not be so forgiving if I'd been wanting to play Dirt 2 tho.

Have to say I agree with Rroff i've very rarely had to wait for a CF profile.

Plus with ATi's next set of drivers the CF profiles will be separate to the main drivers, so they can bring out updated ones far sooner and more often.

Look at the performance gains tho when the support is there... is that not worth waiting for?

37.3->70.2fps at 2560x with 4x AA!

In my experience I would say that it has been worth it. Yes, what you will gain on one side you'll occasionally lose a little on the other hand (eg. more fps v dual support) but I'm defo glad I bought one.

So much for Duran's paranoid rants about how ATi and codemasters had blocked SLi support.

Sometimes this is just how things are with multiple GPUs.

I personally don't mind, which is why I have 4850 crossfire.

As for "I've paid for 2 cards, I want the performance now" simply doesn't make sense.

Is Dirt 2 the ONLY game you have and play? If not, then it doesn't really apply.

Say the game itself is bugged so it doesn't work properly on the single GPU you have (which happens regularly) who do you blame then?

Thats an interesting (new) perspective on it.

Definitely, sometimes it's just something you have to accept when it comes to PC gaming.

It's unfortunate, like that recent EA game bug which meant a lot of ATi cards simply didn't work properly with it.

I think it was the Saboteur or something.

A simple patch later and it was sorted (I think).

It shouldn't happen of course, however, it does and that's just how things are currently.

This isnt aimed at dirt 2, it's aimed at the numerous games that on launch dont support multi GPU fully. Dirt 2 is just a good current example of the issue.

I admit I don't play a massive variety of games... probably half of the big titles and even less of the more obscure releases... but aside from Dirt 2 which I don't play (yet) anyhow theres only been one other title that hasn't had SLI support on release day and even that I managed to get reasonable gains by reusing the profile from another game that I happened to know used the same engine.

Its pretty rare these days that nVidia doesn't have a beta driver atleast with support on or before release day, or a standalone SLI profile update and even ATI have come on a long way from the days when you could be waiting 2-3 months for support if a game came out that didn't fit into their driver release schedule - I'd be suprised if you were waiting more than a week now for a hotfix generally.

straxusii is spot on IMO,

The support for dual cards is still not good enough. Something like HYDRA that levels out the work load would push dual card set-ups along. You don't need to faff about software the chip just looks at what needs to be done, looks at what hardware is available and splits the load accordingly.

Dual cards should be close to 1-1 all the time and its technically possible to build the hardware to do it.

Dont you think that would be worth it ?

I do wonder when Codemasters is going to release that SLi patch then? Duran said there would be one but I can't read so what would I know?:p

I jest. It's good to see Nvidia have gotten around to releasing a driver for some of the few games SLi didn't support.

Only didn't work in SLi out of the box as AMD had it locked out, so nice to see they've finally managed to find a way around it

Anyhow while the comments might be true for crossfire... SLI has a trump up its sleeve for when your games don't have a profile...

32x SLI AA :D

Unfortunately Jigger, just like Crossfire/SLI, Lucid Hydra uses game profiles ;)
It was in one of the reviews, only difference is it doesnt limit you to one manufacturer!

Doesn't ATi Tray Tools allow you to create crossfire profiles for games? I'm sure it does.
