Missing out if I get Mass Effect 2 w/out having played the 1st one?

Just completed the first one without realising the second one was out this week. It's an epic game. Best RPG I've played since the first Neverwinter Nights.

The combat system was excellent, though team mate AI left a lot to be desired.

I mean at the end of the 2nd game, if you die which apparantly is quite likely, then that's it. No carrying the character over to the 3rd.

I might cry if that happened.:(
From all the interviews ive seen its implied that sheperd may die at the end if you rush through the game. The simple solution to that is to take your time by exploring everywhere and researching everything which is what i was planning to do anyway :p

How can you complete a game if you die part way through? Surely you just reload from the last save point.

Probably a "past the point of no return" mark to stop that happening lol. I remember in a save game in max payne 1 in the burning restaraunt I had a save where when it loaded I died instantly from a gas canister flying across the room lol. Good times!

ME1 is a superb game and I picked it up cheap in the steam sale a few months back. Hadn't really heard of it and found it quite hard to get into but after giving it abit of time, loved it. The ending is pure epicness as well.

Hmm, this is really bothering me too.

The thing is, I've played the first one, but on the 360 and I'll be getting the 2nd one on the PC. I kind of wanna grab the 1st one on the PC but then, frustrated bits from the game pop to me head and i don't really wanna, not saying its a bad game at all, I really enjoyed it, but I don't play games through twice, only game I have done is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Seeing as I pretty much know the story should I bother? I know it effects the gameplay a bit if you do but, I also read that the important things that occur in ME2 will mean more for people who know the story.

Would you play HL2 without playing the first? Half this forum haven't even played the first and are missing out on an incredible experience. Same goes for ME.

If you already know the story and don't fancy another play through then I wouldn't bother.

That said there seems to be at least one big variation in the story that you don't have control over unless you have a corresponding saved game from the first.

In the games (tm) review they said the only slight weak point of the game was that the choicesfrom the first game wern't really carried over in any meaningful way.. so I wouldn't worry to much. Apparantly it feels a lot like a new beginning rather than a continuation. That was the only weak point they mentioned and it still got a rare 10/10 :).

Well I have played ME1 on the 360, but plan on playing ME2 on the PC.

I know I will not be able to continue my character however I know that you can configure the game at the start to create the outcome of big decisions prior to play start -I am right about that?

Apparantly this is not the case, the game makes default choices for you.

As far as I understand from what I have read, your characters level and skills are not carried across either,so again not hit from creating a character new. Am I right about this?

Levels are reset as they have redesigned the whole system, but characters who were high level at the end of ME1 get a bonus to starting XP (level 60 start 1 level higher than levels 50-59, who in turn start 1 level higher than those below 50.) There are also other starting bonuses, like extra money if you had unlocked the "Rich" achievement etc.

Wow lots of replies and lots of different opinions! The game is now of course very cheap online so price is not a factor. Both camps here make very good points so this is gonna be a tough one! I think Im gonna go watch some YouTubes of the game it might help me decide. I dont doubt the depth of the story its just a bit hard to concentrate on ME1 when ME2 is almost out with no doubt superior graphics etc. But I might well end up getting ME1!

And just to throw more chaos into the machine my copy of Dragon Age just arrived.

Helloooooo weekend :P

You really should play ME1 as if nothing else, it gives you a great deal of information on the mass effect universe and the characters/species within it. It is also a fantastic game and from what I can tell, the graphics really aren't that much behind ME2. I have also seen a few clips where some of the recurring characters reference "the good old days" i.e ME1, so you'll be missing out a bit as you won't know what the hell is going on.

Not to mention that by playing ME1 you will be able to use the exact same character which adds a personal feel to the game as you won't be stuck with stock decisions or someone else's savegame. Also if you appreciate good voice acting, play as the female Shep as she's voiced by Jennifer Hale; nuff said there.

idiot question, but what kind of game is it ?? FF7 style Jap RPG ? Platform game? Balders gate on crack ?? FPS??

It's an RPG but with real time FPS-style combat. It plays out like a typical shooter but with energy shields instead of armour. You can't just stand there and shoot however, you need to take cover and all that.

OK Got ME1 now and updated to the 1.02 patch. Do I also install the Skidrow DLC pack before I play the game or after I've finished the normal game?

Err, isn't that pirate material?

Regardless, you need to play the DLC during your current game not after it. I've just finished ME1 yesterday and played the Bring Down The Sky free DLC early on in my playthrough. Hit level 50 at start of last mission which was good (except I stopped earning XP since it was my first playthrough!). Awesome game, great ending setting me up for sequel now :D

Definitely play the first one.

Personally I think if you play ME2 first, you may find it harder to transition to ME1. In sequence, the transition is not difficult to adjust to. Both games just play differently.

ME1 certainly sets the scale of grandeur for the story. Only KotOR surpasses that for me.

ME1 is driven by the main story, which is nothing short of epic.

Only gripe I have with ME2 (apart from the HUD and key mapping) is the modular nature of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the game, but it feels very broken up with all the 'Mission Complete' screens for one.
Another very annoying feature is entering /leaving the Normandy. Why does the ship have to fly away once you enter, and dock again when you want to exit. Can't it just stay docked, and you leave by the door as in the first game.

Truly, I think everyone who is considering playing ME2 must play ME1 first. Obviously this won't happen in a lot of cases, but at least I've said it.

It would be a shame if someone plays ME2, thinks it is cool and wants to find out about the first one, only to find it is a little less streamlined.

Again I want to emphasise, I am enjoying ME2 and it is a worthy sequel, full of humour and substance. Just don't go expecting ME1 to have a similar Halo/Gears feel as ME2. Especially the PC version.
