What really annoys me when trying to save power.

Drives me up the wall on my way home from work through a trading estate..
Open plan office buildings with every single light in the ceiling on and not a soul in sight.
Maybe the cleaners are in there but on every floor everything is glowing like a Christmas tree.

Thing is they can have enough lighting for cleaning and security even if they switch off half the lights. I don't understand this about shops like Primark, which leave ALL the lights even the spotlights. If they are putting out stock during the nights then can have enough lighting by switching off the spotlights and keeping the overheads on. That's what we did in IKEA when I worked there.

Sorry but as stated above a lot of shops (especially highstreet) keep lights on for security purposes. It's usually to allow CCTV equipment get decent videos, at least that was what I was told when I worked a Saturday job when I was younger.

Asda do that in the 24 hour stores through the night. They turn off every other striplight, and all the fridge / freezer lights are also turned off. Thats one of the reason why I like shopping at 2 in the morning.

It does bug me all the lights that are left on in bloody high street shops especially big chains, sure for security purposes with colour in cameras, but sod it theyd save a hell of a lot more money by not running loads of lights as opposed to buying ir night cameras. Sure they might get broken into a lil more :D but.... they leccy bill will be lower so they'll be just fine lol

I bought my dad 30 incandescent 100w light bulbs for Christmas... he is so happy that he can once again see things after the sun goes down, after living in the government's utopia of CFLs everywhere for the last couple of years.

What really annoys me when I'm trying to save power is having to turn the TV on to watch Eastenders. If the Government was serious about energy saving, they would have pumped money into research to enable people to watch Eastenders without turning the telly on.
Bah!

Yep! I see that many Woolworths around here still have their lights on once it gets dark enough to trip the sign lamps... Who exactly is paying for that electricity?

Won't be Wool & Worth will it...
They'll be sat on a tropical island sipping cocktails next to rich, fat bankers with begging bowls in their hands.
Grr.

there are 4 floors where I work, we have one, the NHS has the others. Lights are left on 24/7 in the NHS levels, all offices and all empty by 5:30.

Sometimes the cleaner or security guard switches them off but that's rare.

:

What's the point in us saving anything if the jerk landlord leaves 6 strip lights on in an empty shop? There's one out on my high street, ex estate agent, that has maybe 20 low voltage dichroics on behind the whitewash in the window from their old window display and it's been like that for maybe 2 years now. Then there's one I pass near where I work and there are 6 strip lights left on. I make that 330 Watts down the drain 24/7. What a complete waste

Anyway, rant over, just wanted to get that off my chest.

330 watts? That's what your worried about ?

People waste far more energy while heating their poor isolated homes excessively in the winter, or hell, even leaving heating on when they're not there.

Wouldn't that be worse with the constant on/off switching of the lights?
If they use Fluorescent (Strip) lights, then they won't use up much more power to be turned on so no.

But, if you leave them on 24/7, the bulbs should last longer, which may turn out to be better for the environment, as the bulbs contain mercury vapour.

In short, catch 22!

I know a lot of you think that saving power is all a load of b.s. and you can't be assed etc etc because it's not worth your while etc etc. Whatever. Well I'm not one of them

I know what will take your mind off it: A tootle round the block on your jet engine powered scooter. :p

Really tho, this annoys me as well. Also streetlights, i'm sure we would be find with around half of the lights we have now. And the national grip connection charges that are holding back wind/wave power up here.

I try and save electricity too - not for the sake of the environment or whatever, but for minimising my bills. Certainly round the house I switch everything off that I'm not using etc... However, I look around me and see how many people are wasting electricity that I sometimes wonder, what's the point?
