What really annoys me when trying to save power.

energy saving is just for your own bills
otherwise it doesn't really matter if the shops have it running or not since the electricity is already being produced so you gotta use it
unless someone has an amazing idea how to store energy which is kinda impossible at the moment, but if you do tell me and we're gonna be rich :p

yea whats the point in us trying to save power if the goverment leaves millions of street lights on all night!

The local council installed super dooper new street lights in my ward, for the 'environment' and then realised they were massively more expensive to run so now they're going to shut off/dim large sections of residential areas for the environment.

I thought the government was going to tax companies that left lights and computers on overnight?

Guess they got paid off.

If you're going to implement changes to equipment to save power for the purposes of saving money you really need to look at the payback time....

i.e. how long it will take to recoup your investment, for example my solar heating panels cost about £3600 to install and save me about £900 a year in oil and electric so the payback time is 4 years, with a lifespan (guaranteed) of ten years, they will save me a total (roughly) of £5400 in those ten years (at current figures) :D
(Thats not counting the fact that they have added around five to ten grand to the value of my property)

Think of all them lightbulbs at christmas, and those electric advertising boards in america... and we are going to save the world by putting our sky boxs onto standby!

You're either part of the problem or part of the solution.
If everyone makes a little change it's a big difference, which is why this kind of attitude gets nothing done.

You can believe in climate change or not (did you know oil companies actually hire people to convince others it's a lie), but at the end of the day would you rather be breathing clean or polluted air? Would you rather companies dumped toxic crap into rivers polluting our water supply?

The national grid adapts to meet the current energy demands, so "wasting power" really is "wasting power". If everyone turned off lights when they weren't needed, several power stations could probably be turned off.

Exactly. Who cares what the reasons are? The end result is that we use less power, which can only be a good thing.

Unfortunately, it's fashionable (especially on OcUK) to be part of the cool "I don't care about the environment I'm going to drive everywhere in 2nd gear I'm going to leave my heating on I'm going to turn all my lights on global warming doesn't exist so ner ner" crowd.

hmm ever turned off a nuclear reactor?
i dont want to know how expensive it is to turn it back on ;)
and no it is not wasted power because what is happening during the day? you kinda need all that energy so turning off power plants is useless.
I do not actually know how it works in the UK, but in switzerland the most power comes from the 4 nuclear plants and you won't turn them off otherwise you have a problem :D

I dont think many people on this forum have that attitude at all, most people are fed up of using climate change as a tax revenue.

meh i think they do just read this thread again half the people think like paradox suggests.

either students, people that don't pay their own bills or smug retards

Not me, I think its a great way to get revenue. I minimise my energy usage and get rewarded for it.

Going back to the OP, I work opposite Canary Wharf and I've noticed the HSBC building has stopped leaving the top of their building lit all the time. If you haven't seen it its something like 3 floors with no offices, just pure white light behind the HSBC logo. Still, there must be loads of office lights left on overnight.

I know a lot of you think that saving power is all a load of b.s. and you can't be assed etc etc because it's not worth your while etc etc.

Most still live with mummy & daddy, who pay all their bills.

(not me :p)

To not save power in your own home (if you pay the bill) is just daft, it's a huge waste of money and takes little effort to keep usage down :)

I can't imageine what the electricity bills are like for those of you with seti farms running 24/7 looking for aliens :D

Well the good news is we've found aliens and cured cancer, the bad news is we're all going to drown from global warming :D :p

A way you can save power is kicking a street light, They must have sensors in them that turn them off if hit with any sort of force. :p

/i have not done this but have seen it been done

The whole world is a den of hypocrisy. The sooner you learn that the happier/more depressed you will be, depending on how you take it ofcourse :p.

Any energy saving I do is just to lower my energy bills, do you pay the shops bills? I don't.
Yes you do. It hits the landlord in the wallet for several hundred quid a year that they pass on to the shopkeepers who then have to charge us more as a result.

330 watts? That's what your worried about ?

People waste far more energy while heating their poor isolated homes excessively in the winter, or hell, even leaving heating on when they're not there.
There are probably 5-10 dead shops in every high street across the country all with lights on for no reason other than someone is too lazy to go in and switch them off. I make that a little more than 330 Watts.
