out of pure curiosity...

20k?

Hmm. I'd go down the 2 car route with that amount. Being realistic (and a tad boring):

Something like a 330d estate, and a fun 4 seater, something along the lines of an Evo/Skyline methinks.

Without a doubt I'd buy a late model C5 Corvette, a Z06.

That's 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, all the toys, over 30 to the gallon on a run, about 25 to the gallon combined, cheap servicing (with long intervals, only needing plugs, fluids and filters), and cheap insurance. Rare too - not often you'll see another on the road or park next to one - and has that 'wow' factor for passers-by (i.e. isn't just another bland Jap coupe or invisible German saloon with big alloys).

Some facts & figures:

Power output: 405BHP at 6000RPM
Rev limit: 6500RPM
Torque: 400ft.lb at 4800RPM
Top speed: 186MPH
0-60MPH: 3.9 seconds
0-100MPH: 9.2 seconds
0-100-0: 13.56 seconds
Skid pad G: 1.03G
Standing ¼ mile: 12.4 seconds
MPG: 20/30MPG (city/highway, UK MPG – EPA official measurements)
Length: 4564mm
Width: 1869mm
Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time: 7 minutes 56 seconds

Wipes the floor with most European stuff, especially in terms of running costs. It also doesn't skimp in the equipment department like some do - it has excellent air conditioning, a heads-up display, active handling with adjustable performance and damping settings, cruise control, stability control, an LSD, traction control, ABS, electrically adjustable everything and a great 6 speed box.

They are very easy cars to not only live with, but drive, on a daily basis - just as happy loping along in the pouring rain on the motorway doing 1800RPM at 70, as they are doing 6500RPM in 3rd down narrow country lanes - and you don't need some expensive specialist to do the work on it.

Get a real nice one with about 30k on it for 16k....plenty of change to do silly things to it then! :p

Haha :D

Yea, that's why I'm always sold on it - plus it has that certain grin factor whenever you take it out, or look at it that, stops you getting bored of it quickly :)

Great road presence too :)

I'm confused. Is there a budget or not? Two cars on the OP's list can't be had for £20K and nor can some of the suggestions.

Anyhow, of the original list, I'd go for the Boxster S I think. However if I had free choice I'd probably buy my Z4M off myself. Right blend of performance, running costs, build quality and "newness" (read in warranty) for me. I'd be sorely tempted by that Corvette, however I still have bad memories of LHD in my younger days running my father's old Buick Skyhawk.

helpimcrap destroyed the budget within 30 seconds of typing the original thread out!

Sweet a Bentley for 27bags, plenty of body-space to.

Out of all the interesting and super fast cars posted here, I feel a little guilty in saying I'd probably buy a VXR8, but that's where my money would go.

haha er... technically yes - a £20k budget. but it must be affordable to run on your salary hence no ferraris etc for those of us less fortunate and not lottery winners.

hmmm interesting car - one of my short list along with a ford mustang but just doesn't have that - 'wow' factor like a porsche or (a little bit like... )TVR.

Off he goes to look on autotrader and pistonheads...hmmm.... :D

Whenever i see a C5 or C6 i turn my head, whenever i see a mustang, TVR or Porsche i simply don't bother, Porsches hardly register anymore unless its a GT2 / GT3.

An Olgf? I'd rather have the RS4, the Olgf isn't big enough car so i won't be able to shout "Get out of my way" everytime i find someone doing 40mph in a 60.
Quite. I'd take the RS4 every time, but there's something special about a 500bhp Golf. HGP do some rather good things.

As for my £20k, either an RS4 or an E55 AMG

+1, if you can get hold of a bathurst edition, the supercharger whine is to die for :D

Trouble is with the VXR8 is that it has some major traction issues, and some major weight issues.

0-60 takes 4.6 seconds, the 1/4 mile takes 13.1 seconds and 30-70mph takes 4.0 seconds

Its also way out of budget at well over 30 grand.

Then remember that the C5 zo6 will run 12.6 1/4 miles all day long, will do 0-60 in around 4.0 seconds for 20k. And thats N/A

Bolt the same supercharger conversion onto the Corvette (remember they use the same engine) and you can run 11 second 1/4 miles all day long and blow anything else on the road clean away.

You'll have that same supercharger wine, the same thundering V8 exhaust note, but in a platform much more suited to the engine.

You can even get them for less sometimes - The one I brokered went for 16.5k in the end (although that was in the darkest depths of the recession). That was with 33k miles on the clock :)

only trouble is finding the damn things, You get such a poor selection :(

Theres 40 on pistonheads and only 11 on autotrader. None of which are a C5 zo6.
