is EVE worth getting into now ?

I started just before Christmas and am probably taking it really slowly even for eve standards. The reason for this is because I want to max out all my learning skills before getting into the game proper as this will speed up all future skill learning I do in the game. Trouble is that it takes about two and a half months to get them all to level 5 and means I'm pretty much stuck running missions for low level agents at the moment.

For me the early stages of the game have went:
1. Do the tutorial missions.
2. Get a half decent tech 1 frigate and start on the level 1 missions. Stick to 1 corp and concentrate on gaining status to move onto level 2 missions quickly while saving for a cruiser.
3. Started level 2 missions and lost my cruiser.
4. Go back to level 1's to save enough for a new one.
5. Start owning level 2's and save up for a destroyer.
6. Move on to level 3's while saving for a bigger ship to do l level 4's in.
7. Once I can do level 4's I plan on getting loads of small fast ships and flying about in 0.0 space for a bit to see what's going on there.
8. Not decided yet...

Yes parts of the game are boring but I think that the whole learning experience has been fun so far and keeps me coming back. I often find myself sitting at work thinking about things I'm gonna have to try in the game when I get home.

TBH there isn't another game like it where you can make plans for the next year or so - literally.:D

Forgot one of the other reasons for not playing this heh... 90% of the people I ran into were incredibly obnoxious and childish.

Just for those who were asking about graphics - this is what it looks like on an old DX9 card on full settings.

Edit: Just noticed the amusingly named "Ballsac Puncher" on my overview :p

Change the leveling system and it will appeal to more people. I dont want to wait 8 months to train a skill.

And I am glad you don't play as you aren't even rational about your argument not to play. I could easily say I don't want to play MMOs with leveling because I don't want to spend over 9000 years leveling up to the level cap!11oneone. But of course for the majority MMOs with strict levels that is complete rubbish but hey, why let facts get in the way of a stupid comment right?
:D

On topic, EvE is an amazing game, I have played since early 05 and I still love it, fantastic game, get the trial and get playing now :)

I'm thinking about playing again. I do enjoy the game but i think my problem is that I don't join any factions (Apart from the default one you are thrown into). I think I had a Drake or a Caracal and I was close to getting my next ship.

I would love to take part in one of those massive faction wars but really, I never got that far into the game.

It is painfully obvious youve been stuck on eve so long you dont know how other mmos work. Read it 8 months to level ONE SKILL, you cant level multiple skills at the same time. Sure it levels while your offline but it is real time leveling so it literally takes 8 months. The most retarded leveling system i have ever come across.

You defended it blindly due to being an early player and because of this you have a fair few skills already but as a new player (2 years ago) i found my self wandering aimlessly whilst waiting for skills to level so i could actually do things. It may have changed now, as in more things to do whilst you wait to level but i still think the leveling system is EXTREMELY flawed. No other mmo takes this long to level one ability.

If it's taking you 8 months to learn a skill then learn to play better. Eve is a sandbox, if you can't figure out :

a) how to play
b) how to progress your playstyle

then it seems Eve isn't for you. I have no idea what you are talking about in terms of levelling abilities? it'll take 1 - 3 months to become proficient in a variety of aspects in Eve. Missions, PvP, trading, exploration.
Pick one you enjoy, have fun, make ISK and either specialise or generalise your skill plans.
It is painfully obvious you've been herded through most MMOs that have the played time = level, Eve is different, if you can't adapt then go back to your WoW or LOTRO etc.

Jeez some people!

Well I also played WoW for 3 years, I played AoC I also gave lotro a try and I played the Aion Beta so I defiantly know about MMOs and how they play. I don't think any single skill in eve takes 8 months to get to level from 1 to 5, I wouldn't know it seems a very pessimistic thing to look in to if you don't actually need said skill. To look for the longest skill to train and go omg I'm not playing this skill which i will probably not train for 2 years will take 8 months, it just seems like you are trying to find reasons not to play. Don't look at the stupidly long skills E.g. Titan level 5 look towards the skills you need now which make the current ship you fly better or the next ship you want to get better. EvE is a long term game more of a space simulator and that is why it's popular with the people that play it. You start off in your newb ship and work hard and over real time you improve and eventually you fly the uberpwnship5000, and the great thing is every new ship you get feels like an uberpwnship when your character is new.

Sorry what? How can i learn to play better when the time restriction of learning a particular skill is built into the game?

The point is when you start playing now everyone will have waited out the time to train these skills meaning you wont have a chance to retaliate.

Basically your options are, do low level missions for 1 - 3 months like you say and then maybe move onto missions slightly harder. Look for people around your level to pvp which could take forever.

Im extremely patient, i played the x series for gods sake =/

Youre right this game isnt for me which is why i played it for a month or two.

Jeebus, some people try to make you see their warped point of view no matter how crazy it seems.

Olip i leveled the basic abilities, the more interesting ones take far more time to learn. Im just looking at it from the point of view, do i play this game for a year before i can start partaking in the end game or do i stop now and find something more interesting. If i continued im sure i would spend too much time on this. Far more than it is worth when there are more interesting things about.

Im not saying the game will end before i achieve anything significant, it just seems more dedicated to wasting time rather than having any fun. Like i said its not for me and i wont argue my point any further. Just wanted to voice my OPINION.

I'm sorry if I was too harsh but I was just meaning that you looked that the game in the wrong way when you played it. Eve is about the journey and there is no end game, you do what you want to do and you enjoy your self while doing it, if it's your kind of game that is. Of course Eve isn't for everyone and I can see how it is daunting when you first start the game and it will be hard for new players to get into the game, but when you put the time in and get over the mountainous learning curve it is a true gem of a game.

Attribute points? Learning Skills? Implants?

Common misconception, 1v1 then yes I might have the advantage, but why 1v1 bring your corp along, 5 4 month old players could easily kill me. I've been killed by players new to the scene, see Eve University, safety in numbers. Amongst the few older player I know none of us ever want to face Eve Univsersity, 100 new player versus 10 vets = vets lose every time.

There are no levels in the game, see my above point, you don't have to do missions. Jump in a small frigate, join a corp and go kill people. 5% on some skills doesn't mean a whole lot, in fact individual skill points mean sweet FA, fleet tactics and co-ordination will always win the day. You are stuck in the traditional MMO mind set. Don't get caught up in SP's, us vets only use it as an P3EN-E measurement, seriously look up Eve University, loads of new players going around stomping people into the ground, granted through numbers but through good leadership and good information.

Im extremely patient, i played the x series for gods sake =/
I have played the X series as well, Eve and X3 are nothing alike, granted if you don't like the game, or don't like the gfx etc. etc. then fine. But lambasting the game because you fail to realise it works differently from all the others isn't a failing of the game.

Youre right this game isnt for me which is why i played it for a month or two.

Jeebus, some people try to make you see their warped point of view no matter how crazy it seems.
And some people try to cry over game mechanics when the mechanics are sound, just their inability to use them is at fault.

Doesn't require a year to get to "end game" which isn't a term you can apply to Eve, what is endgame? Faction ships? Level 5's? Alliance 0.0 warfare? If you wanted to have "end game" fun within a month or two you could be

If they make a brand new iteration of the game ill give it a serious try, but apart from the skill thing i dont like the level gap either...

Anyway ill go back to my pansy mmo, sto :)

So, I know this gets posted a lot, but I figured it was time for a slight modification:

STO isn't pansy :) it's a good MMO. I'm liking it despite all the naysayers :)

Once you get going and can fund your PVP

THIS is the problem I had with Eve. PVP was a lot of fun - but it costs a lot to do that. And unless you spend countless hours doing mindless missions you can't do that.

I'd quite happily get back into the game - I'd gotten to the stage where I could fly some decent small (but quite expensive) ships for PVP. The issue was that when I lost (which was often) I was massively out of pocket - and this meant I couldn't afford to do the fun stuff.

Isk doesn't grow on tree's and the mindless tedium of doing missions questionably outweighs that.

I have an '05 toon with 33m sp and a host of PvP based skills. I still get shot to bits regularly by people with a tenth of my skill points, because I suck at combat, and they're particularly good at it.

Show me another mmo where the equivalent of a level 50 can get taken down by a level 10.
