Nokia N900

pretty gimp....

I assume you mean pimp? :p

I found it handy because no matter what FTP server I was using on the PC at home, I would ahve trouble accessing it at times, for no apparent reason, all the prots were forwarded correctly, the permissions were set up right, all the boxes ticked and the I's dotted, but even then sometimes I'd be able to log in, and at other times it would just say no.

So far with remote desktop I've always been able to log in and out, and it gives me access to the files I was after anyway, so I just got rid of the FTP server software and use this instead. Gives me a few more options too, not just file access. I guess its more insecure, but its just a home PC so I wont worry too much.

The rDesktop app is awesome, definately a wow from me. I posted this from my computer at home, while sitting in the car 50miles away on my n900. :D

I'm looking forward to rDesktop a lot. But because I'm a linux noob (despite trying to "get in to it" a few times) and scared of hurting my precious N900, I only install things from the Extras repo, may have installed one or two things from Extras-Testing, and won't touch Extras-Devel.

Where is rDesktop at the moment? Has it even made it to Extras-Testing yet?

bit of a linux noob myself, but surely if you do brick you can do an os reinstall?

linky please :D

Its in the extras-devel repository.

Another thing i installed is Stellarium, came as a debian package, that on the other hand was a lot more intimidating to install via termial, as opposed to app manager, however i got it working and got the required dependancies for it all via terminal.

I have to say that terminal starts to make a whole lot of sense once you've used it a few times, now I'm playing with the idea of having another blast at linux on my desktop pc.

But two things that worry me are losing my data (without backing up all the time to my PC). But also, un-optified apps chewing up space!

Its actually pretty hard to wipe user data from the N900, really hard. Flashing with normal F/W will still preserve user data.

sent mine for refund to nokia and the vodafone one comes tomorrow, cant wait. might have to flash it to get rid of voda icons etc ( i heard voda using their own branding in firmware)

Not seen any Voda branding on mine, they have tried to keep the handset "vanilla" :)

yeh original batch was vanilla, so was stock from 3rd party like carphonewarehouse and other places that had n900 in stock. apprently new batch from voda (shop or online) is locked to voda and modified to exclude voip and some branding. I hope i get vanilla one :D will update here which one i get from voda

Mine just arrived!

I never realised 'Out of stock' ment a 3 day delivery lol

No Voda branding on the outside of mine... Just about to switch on...

I'd imagine its going to be pretty damn easy to remove any branding from the phone, except the operator logo on the case itself, as for disabling voip, its a simple matter to reinstall it from the repository, if that doesnt work, just reflash the phone to the standard firmware arrives, that'll do the trick. Bit of a waste of time on vodafones behalf tbh, you cant lock down an open source phone!

I saw someone above mention that they dont want to use unoptified apps because of the space usage, personally I wouldnt worry about that, from what I gather, what happens is that the app installs bits of itself to areas where it would expect to for a normal linux install; but the phones directory structure is a bit different. However the uninstall process still knows where it put all its parts, so when you remove the app it tidies up after itself as normal.

Still undecided about whether I should ditch my iPhone 3G on o2 simplicity in favour of a Voda N900.

Tbh I think I'd probably miss how the iPhone syncs with my MB contacts, iCal etc. Along with there being 'an app for that' for everything!

Any comments from N900 owners who've switched from iPhones? ;)

finally got mine, it not using any voda branding but is using its own product code which means they can brand a update but hopefully they wont. my original number didnt transfer over so they cut my line on new sim untill monday so using my original o2 sim in the n900 which means they come unlocked.
very happy bunny i am :)
