Apple's January 27th Event

It's got all the downsides of the iphone (vendor lock-in), none of the upsides (size), and a battery life that doesn't see it significantly exceed current gen netbooks makes it look very poor.

My concern is relying on the appstore for stuff. I don't particularly like Safari but where's the Firefox alternative? How can I set up an addblocker? How can I sync my bookmarks without MobileMe? My gut reaction is that this is going to be too tied down as to what I could run on it.

My thoughts (and paranoid notions about Apple) exactly. They're trying to morph the line between "open" OS X and closed iPhone OS on computer-like devices until they can make the move to make Macs closed as well. Then they fully control all their devices which is what they want.

Oh! Models with 3G!

Totally forgot about this as soon as I left the studio!

Just had a quick flick through engadget so I might have missed something but, it's basically a giant iPhone, only App store approved app's so you can't download and run whatever you want like a desktop? Only 1 app can run at a time?

Seems a bit lame charging extra for iWork, but meh. I see you can connect it to a projector too, so presumably it has video out. Could be quite useful for doing presentations and stuff.

Yikes... contract!

No contract + per month pay for data has got to have operator subsidised versions... also didn't he mention locked?

Summer international?

"We're going to have models with 3G"...

More than one model of the iPad other than the size differences it seems...
