Apple's January 27th Event

I think one obvious use is to share photos with people

Many more photos get taken than get printed in this digital age. (wheres with film every* photo took got printed) * (ok slides etc....)

I hate it when folk give you a crappy phone to look at pics, or the back of their camera.

With this it's more like handing someone a bunch of prints, I'm sure even my gran, if I had one, could flick through the pictures, and on a nice sized screen.

Giving someone a laptop, or even a netbook, to looks at photos just seems so clumsy, almost 'quaint', this is so slick with no hinge, or keyboard in the way (why do you need them to look at pics?)

Do we know anything about the creen other than IPS? Obviously that's a nice screen, but is it 8-bit? or 6 ?

Also, in response to the rectangular pixel comments above, I doubt it, given this can be used at each orientation.

Also I can see a lot of people using one of solely as a games device instead of a DS or PSP. I can imagine that the touch/ motion sensor will be able to make some pretty cool games like are already on the iPhone.

I can't. It's far too big, far too expensive and quite frankly awkward reading some of the control mechanisms games will be using.

Corse theres a market for it. I sit on the sofa at home with a laptop (don't have a desk). I can't lie down with it or rest it on a cushion, I don't type long messages (something like this post would be the longest thing I would type), I mainly just look at websites, listen to iTunes and read mail. my iPhone's screen is too small, an iPad is perfect.

I'm on a flight - same thing iPhone too small, laptop too big.

In a coffee shop doing a bit of web browsing and emailing, perfect.

You are the iPad customer, personified.

You are creating scenarios to justify what is escentially a pointless product. And your the type of guy who sits in a coffee shop for hours just whoring the free wifi!

If the screen is your issue, why not get a netbook? it does everything you want, and the screen is a decent size too. It might also be in a proper HD resolution so you can watch those movies properly... but thats ok, cos you wont have enough storage to put all those HD movies on the iPad anyway. I also know of pleanty of laptops that are no bigger than this, so the laptop to big idea is a no goer.

And the suggestion that people are going to pay $500 (which we know will translate to £400) for a games device to play iPhone games?!?!?! Are these people burning money?!?!

Seriously, it doesnt make sence, but people like you will buy them, while we all laugh at you and Chavs will nick it off you when you try and read an email in the street...

Should have been 16:9 with a smaller bezel imo, like so:

I agree. a 4:3 device in this day and age is pointless.

Unless its a deliberate tactic by Apple so they can release the iPad HD in 12 months and rape all the fanboys for another $500!

Actually, I would put money on that happeneing. Within 18 months there will be an iPad 2 that will be 16:9...

And on a device that size I would expect the web to be eactly the same as on a PC. On a 4" screen yes I can sacrifice the occasional bit of flash but on a 10" screen the lack of flash (and I assume things like silverlight) is a major killer! The number of websites that won't work because of this (including ones like banking) is rather large!

Couldnt have said it better IMHO :D

A bit more power, a lot more storage and some more functionality and I could have seen a use for this (especially if it had decent handwriting recognition). But as it is I think you need to struggle to really find a use for it.

I was expecting a 9" Macbook tablet that ran OSX with a swish multi touch interface.... that would have made some sence.

But this just.... doesnt.

Blimey, the tone in here isn't very positive! I'm impressed (With you, not the device)! Hopefully this product is even too **** and hamstrung for Apple to peddle.

Do we have conformation on the screen res yet though? This could still do the whole portable mini portfolio thing rather well.

This is perfect for me as I have a 24" iMac and a 17" Macbook Pro. iMac is on my desk for photography editing and work and my 17" is just too big for my lap when i'm on the sofa and my iPhone is too small so looks i might get one for sofa surfing. ;)

Not sure that I can see too much value in it at the moment, but if Apple and Google get over their little spat and Google invest a bit of time getting Google Apps working well on the device (read: mobile safari), this could just be a marketing dream for both companies in the travelling road warrior sector.

Minimum £400 for 'sofa surfing'

Wow, I wish I had that kinda spare cash lying around....

The 60 day availability is going to work against them as people may actually sit down and think whether this product actually does anything they need. If this was a buy immediately device, the usual people in this section would already be showing us copies of thier order forms :D

The screen res is 1024 x 768.

The other point is - compare the specs and design and functionality of the first iPod to the current iPods.

Now imagine this tablet is like the first iPod.... Wait for the next revisions, this is just the start. Apple have a history of starting with a product and adding improvements / features ever year.
