Apple's January 27th Event

One thing going for it is that this is cleverly priced. I've been tempted by a Kindle for a while now, and for the small amount extra would rather have the iPad.

When looked at alone, this looks like something distinctly average, overpriced, and with no target market in mind. When compared to the Kindle, it looks like a premium machine for a slightly higher than average price.

Now imagine this tablet is like the first iPod.... Wait for the next revisions, this is just the start. Apple have a history of starting with a product and adding improvements / features ever year.

Good point. Within a few years they will be able to shrink it down to pocket size and people will be able to surf the web on the go! Touchscreen, mobile, web..... I can see the future!!

Back from the pub (and the match) and now to throughly eat my face off :p

Still can't believe they didn't release or at least announce a new iPhone software version - a very disappointing conference indeed :(

iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.

So that means if you get it in the UK you won't even have this functionality for however long.

Speaking of the Kindle, I wonder what this thing is like to use outside in daylight. Might just become a $499 mirror...

TBH, Apple fanboys would buy a $500 mirror if it had an Apple logo on it....

If you compare it to a kindle, this is a bargain.

If you compare it to a notebook, this is not so hot.

I've no doubt that it will do well - Apple are good at selling the 'lifestyle' aspect just as well as the end product.

However all hardware is only as good as the sotware that runs on it, and the experience you have whilst using it. You could argue that creating an oversized ipod touch was a waste of an opportunity (for us techies - its locked down, no multitasking, want to replace an existing device/laptop/desktop with it etc), alternatively you could argue Apple has been clever by harnessing the existing App store for the thousands of existing apps on there (for the Joe Bloggs type users) - why divert a proven revenue stream by opening the product up?

I guess if you see the product for what it was always realistically going to be in their product line-up, first glance to me it seems pretty spot-on for what I'd use it for.

This is disappointing mainly because of the software running on there, it wouldn't be just a scaled up iPhone/iPod Touch if it was running a version of OSX on it.

I think my main point here is that it doesn't give you as much productivity as you would get from a netbook or a Windows tablet as we are limited to whatever is in the app store, and I have to be honest, I have fairly few apps on my iPhone because most of them are garbage.

The iWork app is a nice edition and shows off the power of the device but are other companies really going to put as much effort in with the new SDK? I mean are we going to see audio/photo editing tools, software IDEs, etc in the app store which are actually productive? I don't think that's too much to ask but they have really shot themselves in the foot because they could have had it all already if they had went with an OSX platform.

The lack of I/O on it is a bit disappointing too - would one USB port be too much to ask? God knows that they are going to sell us expensive conversion cables to do the job anyway.

Lack of Flash and multi-tasking is pretty bad, I mean if this is meant to be more use than a netbook but it lacks these features then I'm not convinced.

Would be nice if you could share a data plan too if you were an existing iPhone customer but there's no hope of that in hell!

So, in short, not quite lifestyle changing piece of kit that I was expecting - will stick with getting a new laptop I reckon!

Exactly my point :)

But if this is what Apple are marketing as their take on the eReader, things suddenly look a whole lot more rosy.

but....

the ereaders have a huggge battery life and that special non drowsy (eink or something) screens. for those reasons, im out also...until i see one in the flesh and ill re-evaluate.

Seems like they've missed a trick or two with this one, just read about the camera accessory "There’s also a Camera Connection Kit that lets you import photos from a camera or SD card", why not just include a USB port or SD card reader, does it even have a 3.5mm audio jack?

But will this be better for reading books on than a kindle? At the end of the day if someone wants something maonly to read ebooks on then the screen quality will be key, surely the kindle is a better screen to read text on?

HP compaq 311c with 3G for £330 or $800+ for ipad?

311 is a little bigger but full 720p screen, better CPU, ram upgradable, ION gfx. proper hardware keyboard. i cannot type fast on touchscreen

ipad = fail

but ipad will sell just cos it's apple

No, I think you are deliberately avoiding the point. People who say a laptop is better for this are bang on the point. You are deliberately avoiding the point as you like this, and therefore will try you hardest to justify it. You could buy a small laptop AND some fomr of digital picture frame for the cost of an iPad.

No, you could have a netbook. There's a difference.

Now I don't already own a netbook for a reason, they look and feel cheap and they're horribly slow. I have a proper ultraportable 12" laptop because it's a device I might actually want to do some work on.

When I can't be bothered to drag that around I see the benefit of a tablet style device, I don't want to get my laptop out and boot it up just to read a few news articles or show a friend some photos.

What's so hard to understand about that? Netbooks are an entirely different format and aren't instant on by any stretch.

Yes it's expensive for a limited functionality product, apple have never made a budget product, it's design to appeal to an affluent fan base. Just accept that and move on.

It's not that expensive in that larger sense...i mean most of our phone costs more, my camera flash set me back £300 and I only use that a few times a year and each time only for a few hours !

This in relation will be used most days, and more fun than a flash :p
