Apple's January 27th Event

I dont get the comparisons to proper ebook readers other than, like other PC/Mac devices it can read similar ebook formats. The display technology the iPad uses just doesnt give itself over to reading a large amount of text...

Still amazed over the fact this doesnt use a cut down version of OSX, if this was 16:9/10 with cutdown OSX (only to promote a proper web experience with App Store etc on top of it) the examples people have given how to use this would be far better suited...

but....

the ereaders have a huggge battery life and that special non drowsy (eink or something) screens. for those reasons, im out also...until i see one in the flesh and ill re-evaluate.

Hmm, that's a fair point...I don't think that the screen is something that will bother than many people, provided it's of decent quality (I currently read books on my HTC Hero and don't get any eye strain), but that battery life is worth pointing to.

I really like the hardware but MAN the UI is really bad for Apple tbh, looks like they just ported over the iPhone OS and that's it! Just smacks of laziness to me, not like they haven't been planning this for a while

Really takes the shine off it imho

So ultimately it does everything I needed a portable device to do, except run normal OSX apps which means I'm out :( If only it could run the same apps my mac pro runs, I'd stick one on pre-order and sit in the lounge more rather than being in here!

Think some people shoud really wait to get it in their hands before the make such sweeping arguments not to buy one.

For me I don't think I would find it that useful. I don't really read books. However I can totally see my mum and dad using this. They are not interested is specs, they just want a simple device to e-mail and browse the web without having to turn on a computer.

If you could get digital paper/magazine subscriptions I could see it being more useful.

Until they ring you up and say

"why doesn't youtube work?" and you have to explain "there's an app for that"...

"What about my favorite web game website?"
"That won't work sorry"
"My internet banking?"
"If it's flash then probably not"
"Oh... What about the other video websites?"
"no, not those either..."

No, I think you are deliberately avoiding the point. People who say a laptop is better for this are bang on the point. You are deliberately avoiding the point as you like this, and therefore will try you hardest to justify it. You could buy a small laptop AND some fomr of digital picture frame for the cost of an iPad.

I think you're really missing the point :)

With most adavancements in technology you could argue the old one does it just as well. Going with the photo frame example, years ago when they first became available people (And I'm guessing you were one of them) could say "why do you need that, a real photo is much cheaper/easier/better". Eventually everyone gets used to the change and actually starts embracing it.

This is just one small example, the potential for this type of device is absolutely enormous.

Of course, I could be totally wrong - I guess we'll just have to wait and see :)

No, you could have a netbook. There's a difference.

Now I don't already own a netbook for a reason, they look and feel cheap and they're horribly slow. I have a proper ultraportable 12" laptop because it's a device I might actually want to do some work on.

When I can't be bothered to drag that around I see the benefit of a tablet style device, I don't want to get my laptop out and boot it up just to read a few news articles or show a friend some photos.

What's so hard to understand about that? Netbooks are an entirely different format and aren't instant on by any stretch.

Yes it's expensive for a limited functionality product, apple have never made a budget product, it's design to appeal to an affluent fan base. Just accept that and move on.

What you have just described there is the perfect scenario for..... a smart phone!

And nice try at climbing aboard the "im richer than you so there" high horse...

One thing going for it is that this is cleverly priced. I've been tempted by a Kindle for a while now, and for the small amount extra would rather have the iPad.

When looked at alone, this looks like something distinctly average, overpriced, and with no target market in mind. When compared to the Kindle, it looks like a premium machine for a slightly higher than average price.

But the kindle (imo one of the worst e readers around tbh) is totally different to the iPad. Kindle uses e-ink and lasts for the equivilent of hundreds of hours, has no problem in sunlight and is lighter and cheaper than the iPad. The iPad on the other hand uses normal screens (so you get glare as opposed to e-ink screens that really are like looking at paper and ink), last for 10 hours (max i'm guessing, probably nearer 6-7 if you actually do anything strenuous like listen to music and read) and will be barely readable in sunlight.

I agree R4z0r, although I think they're pricey I do think that there will be cheaper alternatives that will fill up the market and help make the tech more popular. Apple's marketing team will just eat it up.

I've often wondered why we didn't have larger touch screens like this, I don't queue up to get one but I can see tons of uses at work and home for it.

Erm... iPhone OS IS a cutdown version of OS. Do you mean the interface? If so why use a desktop OS designed for a keyboard and mouse when you have a perfectly good mobile OS built from the ground up for devices like this?
Yes the iPad could do with multitasking and unsigned apps but it is by no means necessary to change the whole OS.
