I think from that I may have to get Ocean Waves soon, as I quite enjoyed Only Yesterday, good news about K-on from what i've heard (I've yet to see it at all).

Bakes, FMA is great, just about the right mix of comedy, story, action, drama and animation. :)

The Twelve Kingdoms
Fullmetal Alchemist
Karas
Samurai 7
Death Note
I've seen karas (1 and 2), its ok but not the best example of anime, samurai 7 is pretty good if maybe a little long winded in places. Not seen fullmetal alchemist but it is meant to be quite good as is death note.
Twelve kingdoms, think I watched the first episode and then went and watched something different as it was quite poor - I will most likely look at it again some point.

I'd say start off easy and go for something like
Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machina - trust me if you like advent children you will like these.
Vexille is worth a watch for the same reasons although the story isn't as good, the cg is though.
gurren lagann - just watch it, its not easy to describe but spiral power, mecha and yoko (do a google) should cover it :)
any gundam (personally I like 00 best which is the most recent) - it's giant mecha!
eureka seven - surfing mecha
shakugan no shana - sword wielding tsundere loli - its better than it sounds :)
rosario vampire - harem comedy

Then maybe move onto the list you've mentioned along with rahxephon or evangelion (both similar)

What did you guys think of ugrotsaxfryu (spelling lol) legend of the overfiend and the rest of that twisted series?

Of the listed I found Samurai 7 and Fullmetal Alchemist to be good series. I didn't like Twelve Kingdoms at all (found it boring).

Other possible suggestions could be:
Eureka Seven
Shana
Fate Stay Night
Burst Angel
Samurai Champaloo

(like you say there's many to choose from :))

I really found Only Yesterday pretty boring, I tried to watch it three times and fell asleep during two of them. I've been re-watching K-On! today, it's nice and I home that it gets licensed soon (it would be good if it was one of Sentai's surprise announcement/solicitations).

Other than that only watched a couple of other things today, (latest Hidamari Sketch *** episode and latest Sora no Woto).

actually mecha is really poor even in the new season. You have got the gurren lagann ova's though which are even more 'gurren lagann' (if you've seen it you know exactly what I mean) than the series was.

Stelly you could try mezzo for a cyber punk style, it not exact but I think it will work. Desert punk might be another option but again not exact.

Why don't you find an older mecha, vandread is pretty good for example, I'd also say bubblegum crisis 2040 is pretty good (if not exactly mecha in the usual sense)

Coincidently i just started on Gunadam Seed, last proper Gundam i watched was the Wing back in the day. Ive tried to watch this anime a few times but i just found it dull to start, thought i'd give it another go and it isn't to bad so far. It's definitely got allot more entertaining since the introduction of Lacus Clyne and a few more oppurtunities to get to know some of the chracters.

Big robots fighting can only do so much by themselves:(.

that and destiny are out as anime legends (30 quid the whole series iirc) in feb/march/april. Never bothered with them as they were always far too expensive, will probably pick them up when they come out now they're at a reasonable price (I'm a cheap skate :))

Not when they are piloted by Kira "Jesus and God" Yamato. :p

Once you reach the second half till the end, and maybe perhaps pick up on the sequal Gundam SEED Destiny, you'll see how ridiculous it gets. Lacus' pixie dust is special. :D

I just made a rather nice discovery - the Royal Space Force Wings of Honneamise BD is apparently region free, and even nicer it's available in a double pack (with the DVD) from Rightstuf for $40 :)

I just placed an order for it, along with a couple of other items due to ship in April, as I've wanted a copy of Wings for ages, but it's always been either too expensive to warrant buying, or a really poor release (the original Manga US DVD was pretty much a list of how not to do a DVD, and the Honneamise releases had a silly RRP*).

Whilst I promised myself I wouldn't buy any anime in February, I think I can bend the definition of "buy" on this occasion, as it shouldn't ship until April :P

*Although in the case of Patlabor and Gunbuster it didn't stop me buying the DVD releases :p

I tend have a problem with the older anime's .... I want to like them but I just tend to get switched off by the graphical styles which is a shame.

Finished Spice and Wolf this evening :)

Yeah some anime i have is old style which isnt on par with what i thought it would be. I.e below the quality of the year periods compared to other anime of that period.

Got this space anime cant recall name atm but it was all overcast in yellow or green idk so very little colour anywhere. Just had to switch it off i couldnt stand it.

Urotsukidōji.

Personally I just think this has become overrated, but then it was one of the first of in it's genre, so I'll give it that.

I will admit I like my Hentai every now and then, but this is one I stay clear off. I don't like those in the darker genre.

Any particular reason why?

Be honest...!

Same as Phatjayunoi really, it's not a genre that I am into or interests me. Anime as a media type covers many different genres and that title falls into one which I am not particularly interested in watching. It is not the only title I have no interest in watching and I am sure that there will be others in the future.

It is mostly a "shock" title and it is sad that a lot of people think that it is representative of the majority of Anime, (in the same way that some people only think of Pokemon, Naruto, One Piece etc when they hear Anime).

Oh dear I just watched my first anime series (woo anime virgin)- Elfen Lied. This is going to sound weird but amongst all that violence parts actually made me cry .

Is there actually an anime that can top this for me???

Ahhh what a great way for you to begin your journey into the world of Japanese Anime, blood and violence. :D

You should try "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni", then the second series "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei" and then lastly "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai".

Don't let the cutesy designs of the characters put you off. :p
