hi, I recently posted a question on these fourums and had a flurry of posters trying to help (and they did) but i now have one more problem! Ill start from the begining!
I rently upgraded my 4870x2 to a 5870 and decided to sell the old one on e bay as it was only 5-6 months old and worked 100% fine! anyway i ran benchmarks, games etc to test the card was working fine. When i sold it and sent it to the buyer he sent me a message and said this.

Hi! your card arrived yesterday and i have started installation and I can't make it run at two GPUs.Card run ok in 2D but is not working on 3D (screen freezes).I have instaled latest catalyst driver 9.12(I have tried from 8.10 and up and still the same).I have got windows 7 ,64 bit,750W thermaltake psu,phenome 9850,4 GB memory,gigabyte MA790X-DS4.I 've instaled 4 new games and I couldnt run them.Before I was useing one card 4870 Toxic 512mb and everything was working fine.
Any ideas why your card is not working?Please let me know.I know that you are good seller,so I don't believe think that card is faulty.

As I can see You have no time to anser me ...I just want to let you know that card is faulty(i can see you did try to open it or fix it,because there are big signs of screw driver on the screws).I have checked on three computers which are compatibile with that card and it is working only on one core.So in is not in a full working order.I am realy dissapointed.
Please let me know how would you like to resolve that problem.I am waiting for an anser till saturday.

" anyway i messaged him back when i got the messages (and told him i had NOT opended the card!! >:( ) and would give him a full refund if he sent it back. Anyway ive got it back today and its the same card etc but before i give him back the refund i want to test it to make sure theres nothing wrong with it! (which i dont belive there is!) How is the best way to test it/program to use to make sure that his problem was due to his machine and give him a refund and sell it on? thank you for ANY help you can give this poor little noob! :D

sorry if this is in the wrong forum ><i was decided to put it in tech help of this one! i decided on this one as i just want to know if both gpu's are working and thought some one might be able to point me in the right direction... im starting to think i posted in the wrong forum sorry :(

yep 100%!!!! :D i have a photo of the serial before i sent it, and it has a small mark of glue from the packageing which it had when i sent it! :( Tbh... i have NO idea what hes on about >< lol it seemed fine to me!.. does any one know of what i should be looking for? (where the error will show up) i cant find ANYTHING >< s
 
p.s what do u think he means by 2d and 3d.. is he on about 2d and 3 d games?... i asked him a few times but i dont think he is english and like my self cant spell lol :( any one got any clues?
 
Just use Futuremark and compare it to other 4870x2 results?

He means it's okay in Windows (2D) but crashes when he tries to run a game (3D).

Guess so if it does the same on two different systems and it worked on yours in the beginning.

Is it under warranty? did you send it insured?

well its 6months old so im sure its under warrenty :( ive messaged spahhire and hopefully theyll fix it! :D

6 months old = under warranty.

However, chances are they'll want to give you a 5870 as a replacement as 4870X2s are EOL.
 
Check out the screws to see if they are damaged as to me the fact he started talking about screws may mean he has tried to fit a block or took the cooler off and borked the card.
 
2d = desktop etc
3d = Games etc
Basically he's saying it crashes in games "screen freezing" but also saying "I can't make it run at two gpus" which I presume he means in crossfire mode with both GPU's rendering games etc. If his English is bad he might mean run 2 screens but I'll presume he means crossfire.
To find out if your running in crossfire mode there are a couple of different ways:
Easiest way to find out if crossfire is enabled is to download and install a program called "gpuz" http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1709/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.3.8.html when you run this it will show if crossfire is enabled. Having said that, that only says if its enabled or not, that doesn't mean that both GPUs are actually running in a game.

To confirm that both gpus are active and running at full speed you can install a program called "MSI Afterburner" http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/ which is a great prog for overclockinig etc (don't worry it works fine for all manufactures). Don't mess with the clocks etc if you're not sure what your doing.
On the right hand side it has a load of graphs for GPU temp, Core clock speed etc. Leave Afterburner running and Run a 3d game (any game really) then exit the game. Check for graphs on Afterburner for GPU1/2 Core Clock speed, they should both be maxing at 750Mhz atleast.

I believe there is a setting on the newer drivers somewhere so that it says "crossfire" in the top right hand corner of the screen but I'm not sure where in Catalyst Control Centre that setting is.

When I first installed my 4870x2 crossfire was not enabled on by default in the driver options so you might need to check that too.

tempting but took AGES to find the right case for me lol I wanted one with a see through side panel, fan on top, on bottom one at the back and the front :( lol and cost £100!! ... dont really fancy getting a new one.. :'( i guess i could allways put the HDDs in the ffloppy drive bays! lol Woudl they really give me a 5870? wouldnt thy just repair it? or give me a refurbished one :( Also i brought it from e bay.. -_- how can i prove to them i brought it new etc?.. :/ i have the paypal detaisl with transaction numbers etc :/

Lol tempting :D... but i thinkk ill crossfire :D think i should be able to run ANYTHING on max with that :D
