Xbox360 to pc spec.

The cpu's in the two current gen consoles seem to focus on outright floating point operations, they have low cache and are in-order processors, most likely to save manufacturing costs/time (the last Intel desktop CPU that was an in-order unit was I think the original Pentium processor) Modern AMD/Intel cpus are far more sophisticated and intellegent and can cope in a much wider variety of tasks, but then they have to..

A crap one :D

A bit harsh.

They have their place.

Not everyone has the hardware skills we enjoy or the time.

Some people like to put a disc in and play.

My son loves it, he's only 6 but now starting to get into PC gaming.

And they do make a good Media Extender. (only thing I ever use it for)

Well it doesn't take much power to run games at 1280x720, med-high settings with no AA so a fairly basic, modern PC would handle it fine.

Something along the lines of a Celeron e3200 (yeah, they're pretty good now) or an Athlon x2 with a 5750/GTS250 would be quite a bit quicker for about £300.

This would die at the sight of gta iv or bfbc2...
You need a cpu that isn't that much slower than in the consoles. At least a tri core or preferably a quad.

Gpu is overkil.

At 1280x720, with the settings you play on consoles, a 7900GT or x1800xt would do the job fine.

The xbox 360 has the advantage that its games are coded with its exact spec in mind. This is why the games look better than if you had an old PC playing games that were (probably) designed for newer tech.

Except they don't. The graphics on consoles look ****.

That's a bit of a sweeping statement don't you think? Resolution doesn't always = image quality or the quality of the experience.

I'm not talking about just the res, but also the poor texture quality, draw distance, lack of aa, and sometimes, very poor framerate ( gta iv).

Only when used on a rubbish display. I used to be under the same impression until I bought a 360 at Christmas and was more than surprised with the graphics. Running on my 24" monitor games like Forza 3 and Assassins Creed 2 look incredible (for an old console). And mine isn't even using the HDMI output!

Yes some games do look terrible, I have GTA IV for both PC and Xbox, and the Xbox is mind numbingly awful with the graphics, but it's GTA, never a game you expect to have good graphics. See my examples above and play them if oyu get the chance, you'll be surprised.

I don't have the chance to try it on a full hd screen as none of my friends has one with his 360/ps3. Assassins creed is not a game I like anyways, but I'm genuinely interested in Forza 3.
But you have a point, I do usually see consoles on a rubbish tv...
