Hopefully just bought my first house

The house design is called a backsplit and doesn't have four full levels but levels split though the house. There is a front room, kitchen and dining room on the front level, five stairs up are three bedrooms and a bathroom (towards the back of the house)etc. Hard to explain unless you see it I guess. :p

A map http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&sour...036,-81.304973&spn=0.000928,0.002001&t=h&z=19 shows the top layout.

Nice one!
Would you mind giving us a quick summary of you've had to do to move to canada (visas etc) assuming, of course, that you were once a uk resident?
It's something that i would like to do in the future.

Of course. Most information can be found at www.canadavisa.com and http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp

I took the easy route as I'm engaged to a Canadian. :p I'm in Canada as a permanent resident. Basically the only things I cannot do here in Canada are work for the government, vote or claim benefits until I apply to become a citizen.

The main options you have to come to Canada are as a skilled worker, on a working visa and through the entrepreneur scheme. To qualify as a skilled worker your profession has to be on the wanted skills list, I can't remember the official name (http://www.canadavisa.com/new-instructions-federal-skilled-worker-applications.html).

If you would like to move in the future do plan ahead. A skilled worker or working visa can take years to process in some cases. You'll need a little bit of cash and can choose to use a lawyer as I did. I used www.canadavisa.com. The lawyer isn’t necessary but very much worth it IMO, I had a fairly complicated case in which was approved very quickly due to the law firms knowledge etc.

I forgot to add, these are some of the items I had to get in order to move:
- A medical, xrays, blood tests all sorts of other tests
- Criminal record check
- As a PR I had to have $10,000
- List of items imported etc
- I had to prove my relationship and that I wouldn't be a drain on the country (this was fairly challenging :p)
- Notarized documents

I hope that helps, if there's anything more specific you would like to know give me a shout.

From the outside it looks like a garage with a house door bolted onto the side. Odd design.

Yep, I quite like that. Looks small until you step into the house and are like WOAH.

Thanks for your input. I have had a wee read of those sites before, but it's nice to get a real person's opinions on the process. Im studying computing just now so could apply as a skilled worker as its on the list (#2 on the list - but i dont know if they are in any order?). Wouldnt be for a few years yet - but it's nice to get an idea of what to expect.

Does she have any hot, single, canadian friends? :p

No sorry. :( :p.

Canada is certainly a great place to live. The move for me was helped greatly by having people here to help us. I've been living with the in-laws for 10 months now which has helped us save and setup.

There are also bad things of course. Some things are more expensive, dentists for one are a complete rip and the healthcare isn't as good compared to the NHS. I found getting a job hard, but would blame the recession and my bad timing on that. If you are a programmer you'll have much better prospects, they seem to want programmers everywhere.

The big pluses are cheap houses, loads of space and a more relaxed friendly lifestyle. Oh and the beer is crap. :D

Really excited right now. Hopefully I have just purchased my first home. :).

Just awaiting for the offer to be accepted. This is a 3 + 2 bedroom (the two being down stairs), two bathrooms and double garage. For around 136k UK money. :p. It needs a little work inside but on the whole is in pretty good nick.

Fingers crossed I get it. . :)

Now i know where you live! I'm going to wait until you move in and its feeling all homey and secure. I'm going to park my van across from your house and patiently wait until you and the wife have left. I'm then going to go round the back and break in to your home. I'm going to go striate to the front room and look at all the valuable stuff you have and look at all the photos you have on the wall and you know what i'm going to do? I'm going to take those photos down and switch there positions all the while laughing to my self so much a solitary tear slides down my cheek. Now you might not notice at first but within time you will notice and what once started off as a happy day will have a brief period of confusion.

Still sitting in my van watching you with my binoculars not daring to blink incase i miss the pivotal moment, I see you look upto the pictures and a confused look covers your face... i bask in my glory with a understated punch to the air. "My work is done , my work is done" I mumble. I screech off into the night on the search for my next victim.
