Another spec me thread - for my Dad

How about something a little left-field with respect to exec estate? Something like a VW Tiguan / Audi Q5? Will be decent economy + big boot + still handles "ok" + decent ride quality. Will also happily tow trailers for classic car stuff etc etc. Last thing i'd want is basically exactly the same kind of car i'd just got rid of, and one which went with the "job" which he now doesnt have! Surely his "needs" just changed drastically!

re: Subaru - great car, but dont buy new, and dont bother with the spec-b. The boxer is a better overall bet. Also the car is well specced (std leather/nav etc), but very 90's and not as integrated as the likes of audi/bmw. Its a very very long way away from the a6 interior. I know I nrly bought one, but went for the audi.

EDIT: One more choice..... it isnt out yet, but the new superb estate is more than likely going to a very very good car. Bang on the budget i would think.

How is a Volkswagen softroader an Executive Estate?

 Since when did a honda accord or subaru become executive estates either! I thought given the whole gamut of exec estates had been exhausted something more diverse but still possibly hitting the mark might fit the bill, its not like there are that many cars under the heading exec estates is there.... Why do you have such a problem with it?

It doesnt have to be an executive estate - that's what he's always had and likes. The legacy is getting into softroader territory so stuff like the Q5 might not be that daft

how abouts a VW passat? Rather nice car.

He did say last week "I'm thinking about the Passat", that was exactly what I did ^^ :)

Talked him out of that one easily enough though

Well decision was made today, will no doubt end in some flaming but never mind, not my choice or car!

He's going for a Saab 9-5 2.3t "Turbo Edition" - one of the very last of the current shape 9-5s so it's got absolutely everything on it. Had a drive in one today and was typical Saab - very quiet and comfortable, nicely made and with 260bhp it shifted pretty well too :)

He's buying brand new - I did raise the depreciation issue but he's more concerned with finding the car he wants. A rather massive discount helps too, bringing it in quite considerably under budget.

He's always loved Saabs (he had 4 9000s in the 90s) so this should suit him :)

Lol, each to their own, I quite liked it :)

He's getting it in silver so the spectacles aren't as bad :D

nice motorway cruiser, but they ruined it with the chrome garments around the headlamps lol "What were they thinking!". Cant imagine the discount is going to make up for the stratospheric depreciation, they weren't brilliant for tha last few years, but with the trouble the whole compny is in, it must get worse. i.e. rover etc.

Whats the warranty like? given Saab have been in/out of business for the last few months?

Well I think you'd be pretty daft to turn down a 20k car because of some chrome trim! They're not to everyone's taste but on a silver car they arent too bad at all.

As I said above, he's more concerned about getting the car he likes than worrying about what it will be worth in 3 years time.

Its a 3 year warranty (which is how long he's planning to keep it), and it's looking like Saab are a bit more stable than they were a few months ago.

I like the fact it's a bit different, doesnt have the image problem that a lot of similar cars have and the massive midrange grunt :)
