** Catalyst Grey Screen HOTFIX **

I was only getting the vertical lines, no grey screens, and the vertical lines happen randomly for me so I'll have to wait and see if they make any difference.

Nice to see they've finally fixed (or attempted to fix) this issue.

What's disgraceful is that the timing of this means it's almost certainly a response to the criticism of their drivers in a recent Tom's Hardware article and that it took this to actually make them do something about it.

i imagine they've been working on it for a while. Fixing something like the gsod doesn't happen overnight. Would be foolish to release a temp fix and then get slated again.

As for me these have dropped my temps by 2ºc so now idles @ 30ºc and peaks at 60ºc (whilst running Vantage). I am also running the latest bios for my 5870 so hand in hand they are working well together.

did not fix

Worked for a while - i think untill i rebooted the pc then straight back to black and grey screen deaths!
sort it out ATI!

I was getting mildly worried and considering a RMA as I had this issue a few times while watching something on vlc. I had one today also which is either 2nd or 3rd time.

It does not bother me much as it does not happen too often and never happened during playing a game. At least now I know a fix is being worked on and its not just my card :)

Didn't fix on my 5770s but then it does say it's for Cypress.

I can normally replicate this issue by playing music in windows media player. I reckon it's something to do with the clock changes when opening up a program such as WMP as it uses acceleration?

Loads of problems with these cards (thankfully i dont get any), these coloured screen crashes, the vertical lines, cards taking 20+ seconds to post etc....

Come on ATi do a Toyota, mass recall, you've released duffers here. :D

Just started clocking my 5850, got a GSOD after a few mins in furmark @ 1000/1200 with 1175mV.

This "fix" doesn't do anything.

Overclock is probably unstable. in fact looking at the voltage IT IS unstable. That issue is nothing to do with ATI and is plain user error.

I get it at stock speeds though?

I don't get it and I've had 3 5*** cards in my system now. My theory is that these cards are sensitive to fluctuations of the PCI-E bus speeds, and that MB's start to drift out of spec on the PCI-E bus the more the FSB is pushed. 100mhz becomes 103 or 97mhz or fluctuates between high and low values on the PCI-E bus.

I got grey screens with stripes when testing stability @ 4.2 ghz with a 20 multi on my i7. I dropped it back to 4.0ghz with a 21 multi and its been solid as a rock ever since.

Yeah but your system is overclocked even if your gpu isn't. I can get it 3 times a day if I try and run my system at 4.6Ghz which ran fine with my gtx260.

At 4.25Ghz I haven't had it for a couple of months.

It was, without question, the overclock on my CPU/mobo that was causing these issues and a few others have also confirmed this to be the case.

Your theory on PCI-E bus speeds is a very good one. What would you say is more likely to cause the problem, the speed fluctuating to a lower value (like 97mhz) or a higher one? I would have thought the lower one as I've never seen a motherboard with an option for anything under 100mhz.

i think this error can only be truley fixed by a bios upgrade! these crashes people are getting, i think are caused by the low 2d clocks and low 2d voltages because i rememeber when i was messing around with flashing a 4870x2. i set the 2d clocks really low and the 2d voltages low and then i was getting this exact crash but the card would always be perfect in games and run for hours. go back to desktop and would get a crash like this! cant say ive ever had this problem on my 5870's though. just putting in my input for when i think the underlying problem is xD

I think each MB could be different and its difficult to know for certain with that particular part of the board. Some may "droop" and some may overrun as things get pushed more and more.

I've had a couple of conversations with guys now that have stabilized their grey stripes crashing by backing off very high CPU and MB overclocks. I managed to reproduce it by pushing my cpu overclock more than what it is at now. Given the high frequencies involved even at stock on these new cards it's understandable if they trip over if there are instabilities elsewhere.

If I was getting grey stripes I would run my system at lower clocks or even stock just for a few days to see if it still happens, and if it stabilises re-do the overclock with the new card in mind.

Overclocked systems need plenty of balancing to stabilise and when you add a graphics card to a overclocked system there is a good chance you may have to start again and re-balance the overclock completely.

It's probably because you don't overclock ... just a thought.

before this hotfix , i was getting colour screens crashs even with everything at stock.

but this hotfix has seem to of fixed it.
