Who has NEVER Kerbed an alloy wheel ?

I've never kerbed a wheel while parking, but I have had them kerbed by pot holes and, oddly, a large speed bump.

With regards to the bump, I was driving towards one that was flush with the kerb at the peak (and this went on for just about a car length), but not on the "inclines". I drove up it and realised the person coming the other way was trying to swing in to a turn, so moved over to stop our mirrors clashing/us crashing, and my nearside wheel drove on to the kerb itself just off the edge of the speed bump. It must have been fractionally so, as I sort of "popped" off the kerb on the way down the bump and kerbed the wheel!

I've never curbed an alloy despite parking for years every day on-street for Uni.

There is a simple secret - when reverse parking, lower your passenger side mirror down so you can see your rear wheel. Now you can see exactly how close it is to the curb at all times. If your car auto dips you'll probably need to adjust the mirror down a bit further to see just the wheel.

This is what I've done ever since my black WRX. Since owning my STi..nearly 2 years now, I've not curbed the wheels once, just previous owner marks unfortunately.

I may or may not have taken a great ****ing chunk out of the stupid Vectra 19" SRi alloys along with most of the sidewall. But apart from that, no never.

Never scapped mine, probably because I'm so aware of the fact that they are very, very easy to kerb as the MV2s stick out quite a way. The previous owner had scratched one alloy though, but I'm still looking to get a new set for the rod anyway so 'tis minor.

The auto dipping mirror does help quite a bit, although I am useless at getting close to the kerb so that helps me anyway ;) My main worry is always the front splitter, I've already scratched the under side of it twice on high speeds bumps and high kerbs :( makes me wanna cry...

My Dad's tyres on his chrysler are like giant kerb eating monsters so they ain't phased by anything.

I can't help thinking people who have never kerbed a wheel either don't park the car much, park miles away from the kerb every time or don't live in town where they are always squeezing into tight parking spaces along a road.

I was thinking just that, especially the town parking bit. I’ve done it a few times over the years but then who scares about a few scratches. ;)

Thanks, some good advice about changing the mirrors temporarily to help you reverse park and not clip the wheel.

What about when going in front ways along a road when there is no need to revers park, do you guys just give the kerb a wide berth and then bring it in or tidy it up using reverse gear then.

Also what about if someone sandwiches you in to a tight space on a roadside, I 've seen this happen to a few people and they sometimes catch the wheels on the kerb as they are trying to turn them out enough to get out of the space and the angle they are at means they will inevitably scrape the kerbstone.

cheers

I constantly have my left hand mirror down for this very purpose.

In 8 years of driving, I have kerbed an alloy only twice, one time in my first car, a Fiesta SI, and once in my BMW 330CI, I still have nightmares about the noise even now :(

My only real tip is make sure your offside mirror is adjusted correctly so you can see the kerb, and be really careful.

erm maybe once or twice in loads of years
Yeah, same here.

Since getting a new car with powered mirrors i can at least to dip them to help out which is nice.

All of my cars have had terrible kurb marks from previous owners though so it's not like i'm protecting them to keep them mint either. :(

I kerbed one of my alloys parking in Powerstation's car park at one of the RR days :(

I think paradigm saw and laughed, which just made it worse...

contact 'the wheel specialist', they have a few places around the country iirc, cost me £160 for a refurb and powdercoating, thats including rebuilding the profile on one of the rim lips due to the precious owner trying to diy with a grinder!!!
Ps. i got a £50 discount because i left it a while after i got the quote and to get me in they gave me a discount:)

Only problem I have with that is I need all four doing which would be about £600 looking at it.. :(

I've hated parking ever since I bought a car with power steering and hence forth suck at it. I park on a curb at home as I live in the ghetto and at the moment I park in a residential are near work and the gaps are usually pretty poor.

That said, I aint scraped a wheel when parking normally. I have clipped two curbs when pulling in and out of dodgy junctions though, which is much worse tbh.

I kerbed one of the TE37's on the Skivvic whilst trying to pull over quickly on the opposite side of the road a couple of years back.

I believe the pain would only be equalled to being buggered ruthlessly and without cessation by Michael Clarke Duncan.

I curbed one two days after getting the car. I was parking on a road, going forward to pull up and stop behind another car. I didn't notice that one of the curbstones was leaning forward. Scrape.
