BMW 7 Series?

Little update.
I was in London over the weekend so we spend Saturday looking at cars.
BMW 7 Series – we could not find one on display at our local dealer however we have discounted this due to the comments in this thread.
Mercedes CLS – my dad has always had his heart set on one of these however after taking a look at them over the weekend the rear seats are a little too cramped and it was just not as good as he expected it to be.
Jaguar XJ– We have a winner, they seem to offer fantastic value for money and you get a lot of car for the money. The dealer had a 08 car that had a list price of 58k new up for sale at 28k.
On a side note he was very impressed by the BMW X6 which may look at if he gets another job with a company car.

Thanks for all input it proved to be quite helpful

No worries ...so your Dad will be joining the Jaaag club then :D

Although I am actually going back to BMW ownership myself, but the Jaguar XJ is a wonderful car, with a special place in my heart. Not so great if you want driving involvement, fantastic if you want to waft around all day in absolute luxury ...and it looks drop dead gorgeous. Still nicer to drive than an S class or a Lexus LS though imho.

Which engine is he looking at for the XJ?

I read somewhere the new XF is as big as the old XJ inside (bar a tiny bit of rear headroom because of the coupe look), but you Dad may prefer the 'older' Jag styling of the XJ?

Please lord, let it be a 4.2 V8 or the 3.0 V6 petrol ...diesel is just ...wrong in the XJ, as good an engine as it is, it's like putting an oil bruner in an Alfa or Yvonne Strahovski in Nora Batty's finest.

Good choice. As mentioned the CLS is not a full on luxury car, for that Mercedes' offering is the S-Class. The CLS is an E-Class based 4 door coupe, with a fairly small interior.:)

Well we would have preferred to have a big petrol however they are quite hard to find so chances are he will end up with the 2.7d which is probably not bad as I will be living 200 miles away and he will probably come and visit every couple of weeks.

We both really liked the XF however the older style XJ was more to his taste.

Understandable with the old Jag styling.

However is the 2.7d the same that's in the old(er) Range Rovers? As I was reading in this months Car magazine that the 2.7d in those is a terrible engine and you should look at any petrol and only going for it unless you must have, and that the new 3.0d V6 was so much better.

I'm only assuming with brands and age it *could* be the same engine?

The 2.7 is the one in the Discovery 3, which has recently being replaced by the Discovery 4 with the optional 3.0 diesel (as introduced in the XF) which supposed to be far better.

I dont believe the RR ever came with the 2.7. It came with the BMW 3.0 first and then later with the TDV8.
