BELKIN HD GIGABIT POWERLINE - LIMITED TIME OFFER @ JUST £67.99

Hmm... would be interested in the response time when someone gets these.
Supertaff or anyone else perhaps if you get this before installing to router could you do a ping test before and after to see what the difference is?
Thanks.

Hi Culinia,

What I'll do is a comparison

Server -> Router -> HTPC
Server -> Router -> Netgear 200 Home Plugs -> HTPC
Server -> Router -> Belkin HD Gigabits Plugs -> HTPC

I'll do a ping test and also a file copy test.

If anyone wants any other combinations, as longs as they're not to complicated let me know and I'll give it a try.

Sounds interesting keep us informed I would like to see the results, can you also inclued which internet provider / router / and setup combination you have.

How long are these on offer for? The only reason I ask is that I've just ordered a new router off ocuk, and may possibly invest in some of these depending on how good/bad the router wireless is!

Anyone thinking about it, do it. Powerline networks are great. Ok you don't get max speed. But you'll get more than enough. I got a set rated at 200mbps and it connects at 100mb.
Once you've used them you will never go back to cable or wifi.

Agreed, powerline was my best purchase ever. Computer kit wise..

I've got a 80mbs set of another supplier's value range and they work great. They are more than enough for broadband and HD streaming but copying large files over can be painful. Same kind of performance to wireless really just without the dropouts.

I have a router plugged in one end and a netgear 4 port switch the other end, feeding my XBOX 360 and HTPC.

I still use wireless at home but only for the laptop.

only while stock lasts.. and they are going very fast!

Ma ny apologies to those who have been waiting for my results on this.

I've been delayed as I've been putting my new study together so all my kit has been disassembled.

I finished putting my new PC's together last night. So I'm hopeful that I can set up a test either tonight or tomorrow.

Ok,

Have done some basic testing

Test set up is

Gaming Rig -> Router -> HTPC

Gaming PC (spec in Sig) linked to router via CAT6.
Router is D-Link DIR-655 Cable 4 port router.
Router connected to power supply plug (Netgear HDX101 & new Belkin HD)
HTPC Connected to power supply plug (Netgear HDX101 & new Belkin HD)

Test 1) Ping test run 4 times
NetGear HDX101 - Ping average 4ms (max 14ms)
Belkin HD - Ping Average 1ms (max 4ms)

Test 2) File copy - Copy file from HD of Gaming PC to HD of HTPC
NetGear HDX101 - Average copy speed 8.7mb/s
Belkin HD - Average copy speed 7.5mb/s

So slightly confusing results. I've repeated Test 2) 3 times and have had the same results everytime with the file transfer being consitently faster with the Netgear.

I'm going to bed now, but will try some more tests tomorrow as I can't work out why the higher rated (1000mbps) plugs are consistently slower than the older (200mbps) plugs on the file transfer. But constitently faster on the ping tests.

Cheers

Taff

I am sure overclockers watch what I buy from other suppliers and then drop the prices to torture me. I kicked myself when I noticed Ocuk were selling them for £86 and I paid £100 about 2 weeks ago at this price its a steal.

One bit of warning about these, they are large and if your plug socket is near the skirting board they can have issues plugging in.

I am tempted to buy another pair so I have greater connectivity around the house at this price.

How hot do these run?

The HDX101s I've had ran scarily hot. In fact, I managed to kill two of them, quite possibly due to heat issues. While that experience did leave a rather bitter taste, I got a second pair but bodged a Cat 5 run in while I was waiting. That bodge is still there and the HDX101s never got taken out of their box.

If these are substantially better quality, and in particular run cooler, then I'd consider replacing the Cat 5 with these and selling the HDX101s.

so overall you do gain advantage when using this powerline compaired to standard ones... It's making me consider buying one :)

Agreed this is the only down floor regardsing this product :( but overall this is a fantastic buy!

These run at the standard heat and just slightly above room tempurature though you'll not need to worrie about this as there designed to and tested via the manufacturer.

At present the answer would be no I don't see a benefit from these. For me the main reason to try these was to get Blu Ray working between the server (WHS) and the HTPC, but with both the Netgear and Belkin I'm not getting enough transfer rate to allow the Blu Rays to play without stuttering. Note :- I'm mounting the Blu Ray as an ISO via a Virtual drive and the Blu Ray plays corrrectly if I use a copy locally on the HD of the HTPC. I'm using Total Media Theatre 3 Platinum as the client.

As you can see from the file transfer rates at present the Belkin HD's are performing worse than the Netgear HDX101's on file transfers.

I think if your gaming between two PC's then they would work better as the Ping rate is lower so your latency/lag will not be an issue.

One thing I did notice after finishing the tests last night was that on the HTPC I did have some Netgear powerplug software installed. So tonight I will remove that to see if that was causing any conflict.

On the heat issue. I would say that they are cooler than the HDX101's, but that was only over a 15 minute run (as I was swapping them in an out all the time). It may be they heat up more over a period of time.
