Old school graphics.. did you ever do this?

I'm 41 now and I’ve had almost all the consoles and computers released, In my opinion the biggest leap was when the PS1 and Saturn were released, I saw wipeout and immediately bought a PS1 and sat mesmerised for hours at a time by the awesome graphics and sound and to this day I’m a massive Wipeout fan.

This is my little list of standout games through the generations.

Atari 2600 - Phoenix (I remember it being as good as the arcade version)
Spectrum - Alien 8 (all the "Ultimate Play The Game" games really)
C64 - Impossible Mission (stay a while, stay forever!!!)
C64 - Uridium (Awesome Graphics)
Atari ST - Damocles (The feeling of being able to roam anyware)
Amiga - Shadow of the beast (Amazing graphics with parralax scrolling)
SNES - FZero (Fast mode 7 graphics)
SNES - Donkey Kong Country (just when you thought graphics couldn't get any better)
PS1 - Wipeout (Just WoW)
Saturn - Sega Rally (A truly great arcade conversion that i still enjoy playing)
N64 - Mario Kart (it goes proper 3D and all the better for it)
N64 - Super Mario 64 (Changed platformers forever)
PS2 - Ico (Just beautiful)
PS2 - Gran Turismo 4 (Still looks good today)
Dreamcast - Jet Grind Radio (new style of graphics)
Dreamcast - Soul Caliber (Amazing looking fighter)
XBOX - XBMC (I know it's odd but XBMC is the greatest thing to have happened to it)
XBOX - Halo (The start of truly epic FPS on consoles)
XBOX 360 - Gears of War (Graphics take another step up)
PS3 - Wipeout HD (OMG full 1080p at 60fps with online play)
PC - Counter Strike (great competitive play that as taken up more of my time than any other game)
PC - Half Life 1&2 (Fantastic Story and great graphics)PC - Battlefield 1942 (Huge multiplayer maps, Drive tanks, fly planes and the excellent Desert Combat Mod)

I have left out consoles like the NES, Master System, Megadrive , Hand held’s and computers like the Atari 800XL, BBC B, Dragon 32 etc. because while I’ve enjoyed them all there not as memorable. There’s also plenty more games that i could have mentioned as well as all those Amazing demo’s and intro’s on the Amiga that were often better than the game they preceded ;)
Think i was about 10 when we got our first games machine a (Binatone) quickly followed by a Acetronic.

Here’s to another 30 years of gaming (hopefully more!)

Doom on the Megadrive 32X or what ever it was called.

Target Renagade(Amstrad cpc)
Doom (Megadrive)
Quake (PC)
Halflife (PC)
Battlezone (PC) that was something in its time.

WoW (PC) Its mixture of artwork and its scale as in play area, it was something else back then. I can't think of a game today that match's its play area and graphic at the same time. I wish I was still addicted to it, a well all things come to an end.

Crysis A great looking that was let down by the old impassable barrier and lack of freedom that should not be happening in games now a days.

What I hope for in the furture is WoW play area with Crysis graphics and solid gameplay that lasts for years.

I'm only 21 so its quite young for that generation but i do remember spending a lot of my time just writing a full book of code out on my dads spectrum just to play hang man :D

I'm 39 and have had gear since pretty much the start. For me the early days of gaming on the spectrum (upgraded to 48K as a birthday present). were the best

Standout games for me are

Jetpac
manic miner
TLL (you get to fly a tornado) stands for Tornado Low Level.
Jet set willy (did anyone ever finish it?)
Monty mole (looked a bit like Arthur Scargill)

The utter despair generated from waiting 20 mins for your game to load, listening to the screech of the machine code, only to get "r" type loading error at the end.

I still have my Spectrum and it still works!!!!

just rememberd my first ever amiga 500 game, nicky boom, that had me hooked for hours... looking at that game now though, its like some drug induced dream!

Pitfighter!
That was the first game that made me realise Great Graphics does not equal Great Game. I think a lot of older games still look great in terms of art design. The thing that really dates them is the lack of resolution.

10 PRINT "the first thing i learned"
20 GOTO 10
RUN

Good times :)

In my maths class in high school I changed the PRINT statement to PRINT "Maths is rubbish" and ran it on a friend's monitor. Then called the teacher over to help with our 'computer problem'. Quite amusing at the time....

You don't know the meaning of despair unless you've ever had to wait for an Atari 8 Bit game to load via cassette. Those badboys used to take upto 45mins to load and were as temperamental as hell. If you did get one to load you left it on all day!

Thank god for the Atari 1050 Disk Drive ;)

Lol, anyone remember watching gamesmaster to get the latest cheats and watch people play the latest games?

My best game was desert strike which my dad borrowed to a friend of his once and I never ever got it back!

Lots of things playstation 1.

Remembering the first F1 game (what a mess), the first time i saw/played V-rally.. blew everything previous to it away.

Who could forget the first time they saw gran turismo running.... lightyears ahead of everything in terms of looks.

Ofc then we all got 3d cards for our pc's and the rest was history.

To be fair, there are some games where even though the graphics are terrible you don't actually notice and others where it really grates on you.

1 game that springs to mind is Morrowind, the graphics of that really get to me. Yet Doom i don't mind.

Haha yeah, that was a class program.... I also seem to remember another gamer program hosted by a chick with short blonde hair.... and a bit of a lisp - can't remember what it was called for the life of me but she woould have 'got it' ! :)
