Vista 64-bit or Windows 7

Windows 7 Pro x64 is admittedly a lot better than I thought: out of box drivers, 75Hz with my 2209wa(!), a working system restore function, DX10+ functionality and a fast clean install (approx 30m).

One thing I do miss though is having an active desktop (html page desktop background) as it means having icons on the desktop again.

Went from Vista 32bit Ult to Windows 7 64-bit Ult.. If I'm honest, vista once you had the right hardware was fine.. On weaker hardware XP ran circles around it..

Just go for win7 64bit ver.. 64-bit is now mainstream. retail packs contain both.. Obviously don't upgrade, clean install and you'll be one happy bunny.

Windows 7 is good but some of the older games have a problem with being compatiable. So for old games, you might want to have a seperate partition for Windows XP as the Virtual XP mode offered in Windows 7 doesn't allow you to use your Graphics card for games.

Vista x64 was a quality os! It performed like a new os and looks like a crazy cross between xp and something new. I only have 7 as the £30 upgrade whilst i made my boot camp partition much bigger was too cheap to turn my nose up at!

Just get which ever one you can pick up for less to be honest as they both are pretty similar under the hood and are both a significant improvement on xp :)

w7x64 is the choice of kings...

You can also install XP mode so if you do run into any (non-3D) issues with older apps you can probably get round it with that.

edit: beaten to it. pah.

is mentioned above, when you get the right balance with vista its very good i found.
i bought a win7 64 upgrade and at first wasnt impressed and went back to vista64, but on sunday i decided to give it another go, an i must say it is better, faster and more responsive than vista
the only thing i dont like about 7 with when you have programs open like steam for instance, and you get a message from a steam contact, the message box doesnt appear on the bottom of the screen as a message, you have to hover over the steam programe and then it will display the steam client and the messsage as 2 seperate items
other than that im happy with 7

One of them doesn't have the Virtual XP mode from what I've heard, I am not sure which version, as I have pro version.

I think only the ultimate or the RC version (That will soon expire) have a XP compatability mode, I have never used it so i will install my "now old" pre-order Win 7 home premium soon.

I think it's just the business & pro versions, not available with home releases.

Quick Ctrl + T google shows this:

You are not eligible to download Windows XP Mode. You must have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate to run Windows XP Mode
