I only just remembered this game and was thinking if purchasing it again but I wasn't sure if I would enjoy such a dated game so much, are there any games like it, non subscription ones?

EVE-Online looks like it is, I haven't looked into it but for a start i can't put my PC online at university campus and 2 its probably a subscription needed game.

So yea, anyone know of any games like it, should I give the old Freelance a go anyway?

X3 is much more involved than freelancer

darkstar one is a freelancer clone, so if its just more of the same youre after, i think you will be more than satisfied with it.

Yeah, Darkstar One is your best bet. Its more linear and gets rather repetitive tho, and only one ship you can fly but can be upgraded. X3 is a different beast, need a lot of time to get the best out of it and the learning curve is steep if you're new to the series.

You may have already looked but have you checked out http://www.lancersreactor.org/phpBB3/

Some really good mods there that breathes new life into Freelancer, espescially the Shattered Worlds mod. Has a vid on the main page.

Nope, pity as it really was superb. Still got it on my shelf.

Should have made a sequel.

yea it was great online aswell loads of clans even had servers for it lol.

people still play it to this day occasionly ill install it and have a small play online

I remember playing on the Jolt 64 player servers a few years back. Had major epic battles. Hell even the single player game was brilliant, as were the huge star systems to explore. It's a shame it's development went the way it did.

I re-installed Freelancer not that long ago, but all the graphics were screwey, could this be caused by my card, or running 64bit Vista?

We need a campaign to get a sequel, Wispa style!

Interesting, cheers for the replies guys. Have read a few reviews on X3 and it seems like a good bet, just pretty buggy apparently.

Darkstar One does seem quite like Freelancer, may sound stupid but, I really would have liked to have been able to have changed ships.

I actually looked at some Freelancer videos and it really made me really want to play it. Can't believe there hasn't been a sequal for it.

Hmm.. I'll give X3 a go, maybe Freelancer again first as I have it in the house somewhere, I'll see how I feel playing it, hopefully it won't feel incredibly dated.

X3 has a massive learning curve, but stick with it and it's very deep and rewarding.

It isn't a game you can just pick up and get straight into, though.

Exceptional game with huge barriers to entry (the learning curve).
