Ive been using ahci esata for a few weeks now, and Im very unimpressed, it just doesnt do what it says on the tin.

The main problem is unmouting the hdd so you can turn it off,. If the drive has been connected longer then 5 mins, it will not unmount when do if from the icon in the task tray, and if you just switch off the hdd, you risk loosing or corrupting the data you've just copied on there. I have lost data quite a few times just by turning it off, even when the hdd is idle.

So Iim giving up with esata and installing the hdd in my pc, cos I just cant trust ahci/esata for loosing or screwing up important data:mad:

Hmm works fine if I used my old XP machine or my MacBook Pro with a PCI ExpressCard.

I use the disk management admin console in XP and on OSX I just unmount it with a click of the eject button next to the disc icon..

I've seen a mate's i7 windows 7 machine need rebooting to pick up the drive because there's something screwy yet his old homeserver works fine with plug'n'play eSATA.

If you are not using an SSD and concerned about TRIM then install the latest IMS drivers.
e-sata works fine with IMS drivers. Well it used to for me. just the dodgey win 7 ahci driver seems to mess things up ( but it supports TRIM ) which I need ATM

Its just done it again, why wont in unmount??? useless thing

Think Ive solved the prob, I ve turned off "allow files to have contents indexed" in the drive properties,, and the hdd is now unmounting ok so far, but time will tell:eek:

Ahhhh, you're using the JMicron controller for removable sata. Not your ICHx

I do remember the .53's being a problem for me too and ended up using the .49's. When you are downloading the driver make sure you are getting the e-sata version ie. R1.17.49_WHQL_eSATA

TRIM is only important when using SSD's by the looks of your sig you are not.

Does that contain the JMicron driver aswel, cos I think win7 needs both drivers in 1?

Another strange prob Ive run into.. Ive decided to reformat the hdd cos of the data being lost and stuff. So Ive used a prog called "killdisk" and its been going since about 5am and its only got go 5%.. I thought thats odd, so I connected the hdd up by usb and started killdisk again about 10mins ago and its already done 3%. So does that mean esata isnt working properly and should I carry on using it??

Ah yes it does, Ive decided to stop the formatting and installed those drivers you said to get to see if the formatting is fixed using esata. Ive now restarted the formatting using esata connection its saying its got 91hrs remaining. connecting it up by usb it say 10hrs remaining.

I might just stick the hdd in my pc, cos obviously esata isnt working properly?

not sure why your formatting is taking so long.
I know the transfer speed of e-sata is limited to SATA 150, but even so that's fast enough to keep up with most mechanical drives today, you'd just be lacking in in burst speed that's all.

If putting the drive inside the machine is not a concern for you then do it.
I originally started using e-sata because of the noise. all my data drives are stored in the cupboard and connected only when needed now. My pc is all most silent now :)

God I hate computers, I think Ive sorted it now. I been messing about with this in device manager trying to fix the unmounting of the hdd

The "Enable write caching on the device" wasnt ticked, and thats ticked by default. So Ive ticked that, started the formatting again and hey presto, 3hrs remaining.

wont let you safely remove the drive, as it says something else is using it ?
Did you turn off indexing for the removable, as this quite often causes this error
