stupid question but is this a freely accesible street like any other i.e can members of the public drive past etc or is it in some kind of gated community and heavily guarded?

DPG and Mi5 are all over Whitehall.

Interestingly the actual door is now heavily reinforced "blast proof" and can't really be lifted without equipment. Owing to the IRA (failed) mortar attack on Major.

Needless to say, there are also tactical positions on roofs on both sides. Oddly though - usually not manned.

Last time I was there they had guys with G36 in tactical positions, several policemen with mp5s on the street and concrete obstructions either side of the gate - tho they seem to be missing inside on the picture above.

As far as I'm aware, it is dependent upon the current security threat and related response level.

Current UK threat level is "SEVERE", so I'd expect more of the positions to be manned, as per the "Heightened" response level.

Poo hits the fan at "Critical" threat and "Exceptional" response. Not sure if Whitehall (and critical national infrastructure in general) would remain open to the public in this case.

Yeah thats what I'd expect - this was 3-4 years back. I used to work in London and go past downing street atleast 2-3 times a month tho and never seen it like that pic with just holstered sidearms - always been atleast mp5s and road blocks.

Was it TriggerHappyTV's Dom Jolly or some other pranksters that got behind Downing Street a few years ago and were kicking a Football over the wall and then asking for their ball back like kids do? Might have been Mark Thomas even, was a while ago but damned funny, they did it at some High Security prison too :D

Edit Found it on YouTube, was Mark Thomas...
