Did Iran just test a nuke?

That's how countrys do it. Pretty sure Pakistan was underground as well.

isn't that down to not really having any where to test it without risk of the fallout?

If you want to make yourself undeniably a nuclear power, then setting it of above ground is the best way.

6.2 miles deep, that might be shallow for an earthquake, but the deepest drillhole -ever- was only 7.5 miles, and that was 9 inches wide!

That one's still being debated. It's highly likely, but still not 100% confirmed.

The United States, Russia, European Union and China all confirmed that NK had set off a nuclear weapon (albeit a small yield, but still one nonetheless), so I can't see why it's up for debate still? Furthermore, in the little talks they've had since then, the nuclear capability of North Korea has been assumed intact every time.

There is no 'no I don't think it's true'. All the major nations have accepted it. The 2009 test's yield analysis have varied from as little as the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs to as large as 20 kilotons. It was no Tsar Bomba but it was a definite, indisputable nuclear bomb.

Doesn't matter if armchair forumites say no it doesn't. The major states and their scientists and experts say it does. So... NK is a nuclear power, and is being given the recognition of such, whether its neighbours and few allies like it or not.

Fortunately Iran is still some ways off from a nuclear bomb. Last I heard they only had 20% enriched uranium...you need around 90% for a weapon.

Just gone from that. Seismics show it but there was a lack of nuclear particles which would be expected, even from an underground detonation.

I'm not trying to deny it happened, just saying it's more 99% than 100% :p

Why in gods name would Iran test it underground? (and spectacularly deep at that)

If they wanted to make a specitale and proof why not make it an above ground test and release videos of it saying "**** YEAH"

Whilst I would imagine much of Iran is a complete dump I doubt they would want to irradiate any of it. :D

Also a nuclear cloud blown into a neighbouring country would legitimise a war / invasion.

Teki you're a complete tool. What, did they drop Juliet down after it to smack it with a rock?... 6.2M. "Shallow". Have a word with yourself.

they've got plenty of open desert though.

America did loads of tests in it's own borders.

And you really think another country would invade after a confirmed nuclear detonation?

See... this is the problem with conspiracy theorists. They believe what they think would be cool, rather than actually stopping to consider the weight of evidence. For example:

Option A: A small earthquake takes place in an area of frequent seizemic activity.

Option B: Iran spontaneously jumps forward at least two years in atomic technology and uranium enrichment, drills the deepest tunnel ever of this width (without anyone ever noticing), and drops a nuke down it. Without Ahmedinajad even boasting.

I mean... Sure... Option B is cooler. But use some logic once in a while why don't you? When you spout such obvious rubbish about things like this, how on earth can you expect us to take you seriously when you tell us that aliens are controlling our government?

Israel probably would. Given this is Iran we are talking about. Especially after they said would like to see Israel wiped off the face of the earth.
