The Ferminator

Well thay said Q1 of 2010, so thats upto end of March right? So you would like to hope that they deliver considering its already late.

Not really, Nvidia said they would be launching some gtx300 cards in Q1. The 500sp 40nm Fermi chip is now the gtx480....

Nvidia's Q1 is April the 26th.

Unfortunately we have no idea if the gtx480 is going to be 512sp's, it could only be 448sp's with the 512sp reserved for some uber mega 485gtx or something, that we might never see.

Theres pretty loud rumours doing the rounds that the A3 silicon also sucked, so we might only get a few wafers of risk production on A3 silicon being "launched" next month and might be waiting for yet another respin(adds about 6-8 weeks on) for a volume launch, even if A3 was "ok" volume launch will be, well, they are said to be getting between 1/4 -1/2 the cores off a wafer that AMD have. So anyone that thinks 5870 supply is bad, has yet to see bad.

I think Fermi is so late, and will be so unavailable the best thing to come from Fermi is likely a launch of some better binned AMD parts, maybe a 5890 with better power delivery to allow for higher clocked models, and maybe a new model or two might push some prices down the range.

I do think the 5830 looks like its being held back to see what kind of salvaged parts its competing against so they can improve performance or drop price if required.

The most interesting thing in the next few months is likely seeing what response AMD has ready.

:( so bored with the whole situation already, can't wait for Fermi's to be benched/released, just too stop the waiting.

Recent article on Anand seems to suggest its VERY likely AMD are aiming for a 6 series launch in sept/oct as last year, so we should see any 5890 type parts, if there are any, pretty soon so they have a good few months out before they replace the whole line up.

I didn't want to bring the A3 rumours up but I worked out Nvidia will be able to fit 89 ish full core's on one of TSMC's 40nm wafers. If 20-30 % A3 rumours are right that's 17 - 26 working cores at 5k wafer !

The average would be 22 cores a disk (at 230 a pop) with a 7-8 week lead time...

Its had its debut twice already. I wont believe any hype until OcUK have stock in the warehouse. Nvidia are a bunch of marketing, paper launching charlatans IMO.
