RX8 > ?

two power strokes per cycle.. hence 2.6

19mpg in the jeep is what youd expect too, stupid choice of car but then i doubt you expected it to be frugal

Didnt the RX8 win the Daytona 24 hours over weekend?

given that used rotary, i was wondering why it didnt need to pit twice as often as the other cars for fuel etc?

but yes good handling, rear wheel drive fun - but does come with foibles.

but barrys want stuff like imprezas and M3s because theyre gangsta. rx8s are pretty inofensive. it should be pretty barry-safe

I think these are fantastic value for money as a used car, considering the amount of car you get for the money. Unless you're continent crossing or racking up huge mileages, forget about mpg.

I think Rilot did a really good write up, including running costs and performance, of the RX-8 which he owned.

I don't know. I get the feeling that if you're buying a 'performance' car on a budget like that then fuel costs (or maintainence) probably aren't irrelevant to you - I'd have thought it'd be something that every buyer in that kind of range might be thinking about. Obviously if someone is buying a 10-15 year old performance car then it could be classed as a 'toy' but a more recent one.....

I think for some people they still make a good buy. Take Mr:

  • I would love a classic but don't have the time or more importantly the know how to keep one on the road at the moment.
  • I would like a toy to play with on the weekends that is different from my daily drive.
  • A baby is on the cards for the near future so a 2 seater will never get used.
  • I will only do a few k in it a year.

The RX-8 (assuming he doesn't want a rocket ship) fits the bill well with the bargain initial purchase cost.

Well well, another RX8 post...

Servicing - Cheap
Fuel consumption - Terrible, currently averaging 16MPG around London and 21MPG on a motorway run.
Oil consumption - 1L every 2000 miles
Performance - Not bad but should be better for the running costs

See my sig for an insight into running costs.

To be honest I could get a faster car for what I pay in fuel but I'm happy with the performance it gives. Overall the package suits me; sporty, practical and fast. Sure tons of cars fit that criteria but then it comes down to looks and if you like the novelty factor of the engine.

Top tax bracket, terrible fuel consumption and fears of rotary engine reliability all help to make the price of these depreciate at a ridiculous rate. Glad I didn't finance as I would probably be in negative equity!

A car I very much like the look of, but due to the thirst, I'm not sure I could justify it. Mpg wise is probably similar to an M5 (17-23), though I suspect the m5 could probably get more than the rx8 on a long run.

I had my heart set on getting an RX8 for a long time. I almost convinced myself to get one. They tick every box for me - looks and speed etc.

However, they are very thirsty (15-20mpg urban) and do take a lot of looking after. Services are pricey too, and parts are far from cheap (£40 per spark plug, £1400 for cat etc).

Even though my work pay for most of miles I worked out that most of my income would go on running one, and stories of flooding etc just scared me. I decided not to get one, or maybe wait a few years and hope me a new rx8 comes out when I can afford to run one.

Being a rotary engine, you have to be very confident that the previous owner(s) knew what they were doing and looked after it.

Shame, I still get exceedingly jealous every time I see one :(

For me - last service was the 62500 and was under £250 with dealer supplying all parts *I forgot to order the oil... D'OH!*
Day to day - 16-18mpg
Back to Norfolk - 24-28
Oil - just under 1 litre per 2000 miles.

It's not the fastest thing on the road, but it's a road car... Don't need faster on the road.

Only thing I need to do is get another set of wheels - refurb them, stick new rubber on and then swap for the existing ones, refurb them and sell on. Unfortunately a common problem with the alloys otherwise I'd be tempted by the chrome wheels - pimpin' ;)

Services aren't pricey! Compare it to most other sports cars and main dealer services are positively cheap. I'm talking yearly not variable servicing based on mileage which averages to similar prices if the car is serviced every 2 years due to low mileage. Local dealer has quoted just over £300 for the 6 year service (which is the biggest they get IIRC), that includes spark plugs being changed.

How the..... do you manage that! lol best I have ever had is just under 300 from a tank, 230 miles motorway and 60 miles or so of country lanes at sensible speeds (mostly) 23-24MPG. 28MPG almost sounds good! As for the alloys, mine are ony slightly gone around the centre caps but nothing major.

A1M, A505, A14, A11 - it's pretty much all motorway/dual carriageway. I'm also normally not in a rush so mp3 player connected with an audiobook playing, phone in cradle, beep in 2nd, 7.5k to 8k in 3rd - stick it in 6th and relax...

I don't do the gentle acceleration to motorway speeds - Nail it. ;)
