Goodbye to one of the best drives in Cheshire (A537 Cat & Fiddle)

we all know how well specs works with bikes

Was just thinking this, all specs cameras I've seen record the front of your vehicle, which pretty much renders them useless in catching bikers on the Cat & Fiddle road.

Even if we consider catching speeding cars the article says there will be 7 average speed cameras along the 12 mile road, which is a bit less than one every two miles.
With the amount of twists and turns on the road you'd really have to be going some on the straights to average more than 50mph over a two mile stretch.

Seems like a complete waste of money to be honest.

How much do officers cost in comparison?

Surely it'd be cheaper just to have a permanent patrol than to install and maintain 7 specs gantrys?

They do pretty much have a permanent patrol on the A537.

I've only ever done it on a bike, much lower chance of taking out another innocent motorist ;)

Utter crap. The only two accidents I've been involved in (both times with me as a passenger) on that road have BOTH involved a biker hitting us, head on, on our side of the road. Once involved the biker placing himself in a coma, I had no sympathy.

I haven't driven the road in question, so I may be completely wrong but I agree.

It will probably still be a decent drive with an AVERAGE of 50, ie you could go >50 on the straights and not get done by the specs

Lets put it this way, before they changed it from NSL to 50MPH, I could easily average more than the speed limit.

Not that I ever did mind ;)

So bikes don't actually work on SPECS? I went up on Tuesday and didn't see any, but aren't they installing them on the A54 too? I think thats a much better road.

Wasn't it rated as one of the worst roads in Europe a few months back? All the times I've been down I've never seen an accident, although I have seen some crazy riding on the A54, even my 125 got air off some of the humps/bridges on the road.

If you'd been hit head on by a car you'd probably not be typing that ;)

*sigh*

I've seen the patrols up there every time I've been.

Its the clowns that race each other trying to get their knee down on every corner, including the practically blind ones that add to the numbers.

The problem with this that everyone knows about it and so will always be subject to other idiots and strict enforcement.

I've always gone out on organised drives that join up some great lesser known routes with prior planning and the in-between sections ensure you've stayed away from the usual hot spots and there hasn't been a problem. Only once there was a tragedy when another group organised a day and we've all ready the 10pence short diaries I assume?

You don't go out on the road not expecting to have an accident, if you do then you're short sighted. Anyone could make a mistake, not just yourself. Going on a leisurely drive in/on a capable machine is only going to heighten that risk and that's why these roads become notorious. The police have every right to protect innocent users, or they can close the roads from Joe Public for your leisure and the risks all yours. Which are they most likely to do? You can have fun within the speed limit and there are arguably better places to push your limits. Sad to be under the iron fist, but its for the greater good IMO.

ive been up there before. like any mid night run i do its very late at night. was pitch black, streaming with rain. we had safe fun but you just know bikers would be up there doing stupid things

It's not all bikers you know

In fact you've proved it with your own statement - pitch black and streaming with rain really isn't the time to be doing a "run" around there

i take it youre a biker and youd do it in broad daylight? good luck landing on someones bonnet then

i wasnt acting like a biker when i went up there. you, i, everyone knows bikers have no will to live. they were banned from the ring the weekend i was there, two of them reduced themselves to piles of mush that weekend.

going for a "run" for me doesnt mean i go out intent on dying, i drive a car

A friend of mine died on his bike a couple of weeks ago, a car turned into a junction in front of him. I'm sure he was intent on that happening :/

Indeed, my point is, not all bikers want to die, and not all bikers cause their own demise - most of the time its blind drivers.

My Dad is very lucky to be alive and a friend of the family wasn't so lucky in exactly the same circumstances.

I am, yes. If I had the talent to do it safely then yes, I'd have no problem doing a full speed run around there... but I don't so I won't.

you, i, everyone knows bikers have no will to live

Everyone knows? Don't be so stupid, just because people own bikes doesn't mean we all want to kill ourselves.
