heh i do like occams razor! but i would say this is does matter to science, precisley because you could predict other things if there were leprechauns running around, science isnt just the prediction of results, its a struggle to understand them fully.

Science doesn't always need to care (I'm ascribing it characteristics for the sake of simplicity) about the mechanism behind the results provided the results happen and are reliable for the purposes of basing predictions on. It needs to be something that you can create a testable hypothesis for as Dolph says - magical creatures such as leprechauns, fairies or gods for that matter come outwith the realms of things you can create a testable hypothesis for.

None of what I've said should be seen as a dismissal of the importance of science but it's vital that we should understand what science is intended to do, like any tool if you use it outwith the area it was intended then you may get undesirable or unreliable results.

now youre last point i have trouble understanding, there is no evidence for or against. therefore it doesnt exist? why is religion so different from all the other laws (i use that term lolsley) of the universe?

My point was simply that I'm not a believer in any of the religions that I've heard of thus far, that doesn't mean there couldn't be a god (or multiple gods) - all it means is that none of the existing options that I'm aware of have convinced me they are right. However on that basis I can't discount the possibility that there is a god of some description.

At the risk of starting up this debate again, there is plenty of evidence for religion(s) - it might not be evidence that you find convincing but that's not quite the same thing as there being no evidence.

So is anybody up for attempting to create our own religion based around the microprocessor and its billions of faithfull transistors?

Faith restored in humanity, many more atheists than there used to be. And I love it, the world is coming back to reality.

how in the world can you take this small poll from a bias towards science computer forum to restore your faith in humanity?

although i would guess more and more people are atheist than ever before.

Why so many atheists? If a big face appeared through the clouds, said "I am God, fear me", and started performing miracles or causing the apocalypse, you'd still maintain that there isn't a God?

Agnosticism for me.

You don't have to deny the existence of god to be an atheist, only hold an explicit disbelief...

Honestly couldn't care about any of it, my quality of life isn't going to improve if I go sit in some building for 2 hours on a Sunday morning listening to some bloke read out of a book so why should I bother.

I'll worry about what happens when I die, when I actually die, I'm not going to let some book take time away time from me.

Absolutely, 1000%.
It would be more likely to be an Alien but I don't believe in those either (well nothing that could make it's way here).

I was raised Catholic and have never referred to myself as a "Christian". Catholicism may be a branch of Christianity but there are other religions who simply refer to themselves as Christians so Catholics refer to themselves as Catholic.

I don't know what I believe any more so that would make me agnostic. I don't believe in organised religion but I'm not against the idea of there being a God or higher power.

Agnostic but raised christian.

Same, I could never believe any of it but respect other people's opinions, I've only really recently chosen to be Agnostic because I didn't know what it was called until I looked it up, Atheists believe their is no higher deity but their is no proof at all, I'm not one to say so Agnostic it is.

I might be wrong but I'm fairly certain most people that describe themselves as atheists in the poll are in truth agnostic. I say most, as I know that there will be some true atheists.

I was brought up as a strict catholic, ironically my mum is a protestant, dads a catholic from southern ireland, i gave up on the whole religion thing, i dont need some guy on a pulpit telling me how to be a good person, it should come naturally, besides it costs less, every christian church you walk into, the first thing your met with is a collection plate, if churches are so into religion, theres no need for fancy buidings and money, go preach in a field, if the people believe in the faith theyll still turn up.
