Do you think Steam/Valve is or could become.. evil?

I like Steam and Valve. I reckon they should be seperate entities though. I would think there are publishers who wont go through steam if Valve stand to profit from it.

i wouldn't call cheating a small mistake.....the same way your cousin paid money for his game so many other people have too.
if he is to go online hacking then he is ruining the game for everyone else on the server yet you feel sorry for him and not for the other people who's game he was ruining.

Guy 1 - (my friend - who is actually my other cousin but I said friend to reduce confusion with the second story)
Guy 2 - (hijacker)

Guy 1 has an account since 2004. Guy 2 hijacks this account two years ago. Guy 2 for reasons unknown to me buys a new account with new games for Guy 1. Guy 1's original account is reclaimed anyway.
Fast forward two years. Guy 1 has both accounts, but his original account has suddenly been disabled by steam.

We assume it's because Steam thinks Guy 1 hijacked the account that Guy 2 gave him.

Despite a number of emails, the only thing Steam has had to say is that the account has been disabled and will never be re-enabled. They have not given any reason and have not asked for any proof. In fact one of the replies they sent was actually the same as the first message they sent. Leads me to believe that their support system is almost completely bot-ified.

Sorry if I'm being thick here but could you explain exactly what you mean by 'hijacked'?

Did Guy2 get Guy1's email and password and then change the password associated with the steam account and refuse to give it back?

Please note, this is a one time exception to our policy, any future chargebacks or payment reversals will result in the account, and all the games therein, being permanently locked.
Steam shouldn't be allowed to permanently lock or block any games in an account that were completely payed for....

They should only be allowed to block or lock the game/s that a chargeback or payment reversal etc happened with..

Its there service and when you sign up you accept the ToC. Why should they go easy on them? Its quite simple, if you don't want your account locking, don't try and scam Steam. Crying that you couldn't take the consequences is stupid.

What is it with self righteous people like you? "The world is in black and white, if you get a paypal chargeback, it's because you've tried to scam steam".

Do you understand the concept behind unintentional things happening?

It shouldn't be LEGAL for steam/valve to deny you access to your own account that you've put your own MONEY in to purchase games.

You've got an account with loads of games in it, EVEN IF you were hacking, losing access to all your games that you've paid for is not on.

You've bought those games, they belong to you, full stop.

If Steam ever closed my account I'd go legal on them to be honest.

My account is worth £800~.

I don't use game hacks, I don't see the point, however I know that people have had their accounts blocked for no apparent reason and steam have refused to comment on it.

It's like your bank just closing your account that has £1000 in it because they felt like, or because they thought you'd lied to them over a bank charge or something.

Why people are actually condoning this type of action from Valve I don't know.

Maybe you're so serious about games that you think people who cheat/hack deserve ALL their games to be taken off them, but if you are then you're just a bunch of idiots who have issues.

That's not what happens.

If you hack you're banned on all Vac protected servers for that game engine (ie hacking in MW2 wont see you vac banned in Counter strike)

You can still play on-line with the game you hacked in but only on non vac secured servers.

What's with you getting on some high and mighty self righteous rant when you don't even know the facts?

Steam DO give a reason if an account is disabled if your friends say they haven't they're lying to cover up what they did ;)

Steam disable your account if you do a charge back.

But if it was a legitimate mistake by say paypal they will reopen it.

Like they did for evil iirc.

And of course that's a great example of when it goes "well", which isn't what I was talking about.

I DID think people were just banned from VAC servers, however I've came across incidents where people have had their whole accounts banned and not given a reason.

when i pre purchased 'Global Agenda' and played the beta i was very dissapointed, its a terrible game IMO.

anyway, i checked Steams terms and cons and they advised they could refund a game if it was pre-purchased and still before launch date.

I emailed them, waited a week and it was 2 days before launch so i thought they were going to be 'evil' and wait for the launch date to pass and then tell me i couldn't get a refund.

TO my surprise the next day, they gave me a full refund and GA was removed from my games list!

so Steam are great... but don't try and phone them, its impossible.

They ill give a reason.

And they won;t dor it for hacking.

Those people who say they got no reason probably bought/traded thier account/and or did a charge back and then when it got disabled (as per T&c's) never checked it ut/lied to cover it up.

Steam don't just randomly disable accounts.

If these people were supposedly banned for no reason at all, and believed themselves to be innocent, why have they not followed it up until they got a reasonable response out of Valve?

what the hell u talking about i did not try to scam steam or hack it was paypal error

Because 99% of then KNOW they aren't innocent and got caught cheating. The bleating is just for effect. Eventually they go away.

I have had a Steam account disabled due to nothing 'bad' on my part. It was highly frustrating but it was actually cased by paypal being idiots...

Steam weren't much help in the situation so I'm not a huge fan of them either, though I still buy all my games through Steam.

At the end of the day, it is a company...which has positive and negative meanings for us.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago.

On the day Mass effect 2 came out(and one day before Bad Company 2 beta came out), they disabled my account.

I was raging like a mofo needless to say. Steam doesn`t have a call centre, so I had to open a ticket to find out what was going out.

It turned out Paypal issued a chargeback without my knowledge on a game I bought abroad. It was a £5 game too :p

Communication with Steam was sloooow and painful, they are very inflexible so I decided not to fight for my old account anymore (which I had from day one) but it only had some old games I didn`t play anymore anyways.

I issued a claim for my pre-orders though(~90quid for ME2, AvP, BC2) and Paypal got me my money back eventually. Yay! So now I got a new Steam account, and re-bought (some of) my games.

I don`t blame Steam for disabling my account, after all they lost money from a game they already sold. But I do blame them for

  1. not communicating with their customers
  2. not communicating with Paypal to find out who issued the chargeback (I mean we are talking about to BIG companies here, how hard could it be. I bet most of the money goes through Paypal after all and if they **** ** you can lose ALL your games)
  3. not having a call centre, only stupid ticket system that takes up to a week to get a single reply back
  4. being inflexible (I offered to send them the £5, but they said ONCE Paypal closes the dispute and send you the money back. there is nothing you can do and your Steam account is gone for good.)

However, the culprit here is Paypal they issued the charge-back without contacting me first! What were they thinking:confused:

To summarize here is a few thing I found out you should keep in mind if you have a Steam account and don`t want to go through the same experience:

  1. obvious, but don`t try to cheat/hack/do anything fishy really etc.
  2. only accepts Gifts on Steam from people you can trust!
  3. don`t share your account details with anyone, if anyone asks for it kill them!
  4. finally, don`t buy games abroad! If your bank/Paypal issues a chargeback your account will be disabled without questions!

In the end, I only lost a few old games, and got my money back for the new ones so I consider myself luckier than many who lost a lot of games. The system is not perfect, so watch out :D

The OP's stories are confusing me.
Yehhh I give up, I've already explained it a few times.

Buy games on dvd. That way, a third party can't control your purchases.
More and more non-valve games are becoming tied to steam accounts. Steam is gaining more and more control over the market; eventually everyone will have hundreds of pounds worth of games on their account. I believe that their current system needs adjusting - they need to have better support communication.

To confirm, Steam did say that my cousin's account was disabled due to "hijacking" - that's good but what's not good is that they don't give any further detail (ie. when, and what evidence), and worse still, any attempt to reason with them was futile. The only response he ever got from Steam was a repeat of "Your steam account has been disabled. It will not be re-enabled." (along those lines) And as I mentioned before, one of their replies to his messages was even exactly the same as another reply.
