Yakuza 3 dated for EU release!

I heard so many great things about this game, but was epicly disappointed with the demo.

I know this is an old game, but it looked really dated and I thought the gameplay was pretty appalling.

This reminds me of shenmue or is it just me

No it's not just you. It's already proven that the Yakuza series has a few trademarks and mechanics similar to the way Shenmue worked, and not to mention this is kind of like a spiritual successor.

1 year isn't exactly old and what is so dated about it? The graphics? The gameplay? The brawling combat may be old school (Which is supposed to be), but graphics and especially the animation are some of the best there is.

Do you need to play through 1 n 2 to enjoy 3?
Don't have a ps2 around :/.

To fully understand the story and characters yes, but in each game, you can get access some quick flashbacks of it's predecessors just to get a brief overview of some of the important things.

I thought the graphics were actually pretty ordinary, even when compared to earlier releases such as Uncharted. Movement animation was okay, but the facial animation looked like they'd mo-capped a ventroloquist's dummy.

And the brawling combat isn't old school - it's just rubbish. That style of fighting game is fine for a side-scrolling beat em up (which I do love, Streets of Rage 2 is still one of my favourite games), but compared to Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Batman (to name a few) it's just awful and labored.

I guess you have to look at it from an artstyle perspective then as I think it does a good job of portraying the actual real-life locations of some of the Tokyo districts the game is based upon. Facial animation could be said the same for a hell of a lot of other games. I'll take Mass Effect in particular where they look like dead stiff talking plastic mannequins.

And the likes of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are the wrong games to even compare as they are in a different subset of the genre (Namely Hack'n Slash) and Batman: Arkum Asylum is one game that does the beat'em up game differently. The more comparable games are Shenmue; being the most obvious, SpikeOut, Zombie Revenge, Fighting Force, The Bouncer, God Hand, or even the Tekken Force modes in the Tekken fighting games. Many of these games have since been from the 90's so I would say it is old-school, especially when they were some of the first to do it in 3D graphics.

I've never been to Tokyo so I'll happily take your word for that. I still think the graphics are very ordinary though - compared to Uncharted 1; which is an older game and also a PS3 exclusive; Yakuza looks poor. Even GTA had better graphics, and that laid down a far more detailed world to interact with.

Different genre? Please. I bet you'd argue Star Wars wasn't science-fiction . Those three games all had a fluidity in the combat that Yakuza doesn't have. If you want to go older even Onimusha had better combat. I'm sure that's a different genre too though ;)

I've not played all the games you mention, but certainly The Bouncer, God Hand and Tekken Force had much better combat, and they're all last gen.

Pac man and pong are old skool but that doesnt make them good on todays standards. ;) The whole games style is done to death. Its just another poor mans GTA set in a new country. Can we have some new ideas please

Shame many of the NPCs/citizens in the GTA games walking around don't look like much and don't really do much apart from just being there for you to beat up/kill in hilarious ways.

Why don't you look up Shenmue (Dreamcast game), where much of the game design and systems mechanics for the Yakuza series comes from. Almost literately everything in the Yakuza games is just like Shenmue, with the most obvious differences in their stories and theme (1980's story vs Yakuza underworld).

And did I say different genre? I said the word "subset". The likes of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, is because of their fluidity in the combat is why they are in a different league. Hell even when comparing the Japanese games like those mentioned to Western games of the same genre like God of War, Dante's Inferno, Heavenly Sword etc show differences of their own and they themselves can be seperated. And Onimusha itself is classed as a Hack'n Slash game. A Beat'em Up yes, but in a different subset that is called the Hack'n Slash. It's like comparing Golden Axe to Streets of Rage/Final Fight.

The fact that people compare Yakuza to GTA just because they both deal with the theme of crime and hence think they are similiar is itself a moot point.

So you're recommending a Dreamcast game over a PS3 one? But Yakuza is a good game?

You should work in marketing for Sega ;)

Mmm so free roaming...crime theme...beating up people...

Yes you are right doesnt sound anything like GTA. Totally new and original concept

Oh hey check it out, half life is a first person shooter, with aliens, and guns, just like Doom, so clearly they're so similar?

Basically that's about as accurate you've been with your assessment of Yakuza. To simply take such foundation concepts and consider them the definition of a game just doesn't work.

And the fact that you are completely missing out that you steal cars, it is driving game, and also a third-person shooter in GTA? These are things which Yakuza does not have as it is primarily a Beat'em Up game. It's also not as free-roaming as GTA. The only other recognisable game that comes close to GTA is Saint's Row. So just like with Yakuza, it's predecessor and only game that comes close to comparison with it is Shenmue. Yakuza is literately Shenmue in a different shell, just like Saint's Row is GTA in a different shell. Hell even Quake and Unreal in the FPS genre are different shells of each other.

Yes its just like HL and doom

Didnt doom have demons not aliens? Oh hey check it out I guess you are wrong ;)

So you are saying its not a dated game but you are comparing it to a game that is probably three to five years old?

Good input

[EDIT] Just noticed you added extra, but i won't bother requoting, it still added little and my point still stands. You can't take the basic premise of a game and consider it the defining features of a game. If we did that all FPS' would be considered identical, all beat em ups would be indifferent and all horrors would be just as scary. Just because this is a free roamer that happens to involve crime does not mean it is the same as GTA.

What the hell is this argument supposed to prove?

Well clearly he's trying to prove that comparing a game to one of the greatest games ever is surely a boon to its credibility, no?

So when you quote you miss out the important details that I made. Are you a journalist by any chance? ;)

See above, you edited in those 'important details' after i quoted. I've added my own comments to them. Don't be so petty to pretend that i edited them out for my own benefit.

Agreed. Everything about the demo is shoddy and screams last gen - poor clunky combat, average visuals, stiff animation. I like the setting and the premise, but that's about it.
