Seaworld Orlando Tragedy!!

Laugh all you want but it's true - Humans think they can do what they want with the planet, with it's animals and I think a lot of this stems from the idea that humans are above everything else, when in fact we are just an advanced ape with the same right to the planet as every other animal! Read teachings from the major religions and you'll see this heirarchy of animals - us being at the top and everything else below - It's bull sh** and I want to go live on Pandora :( (jokes) ;)

We are above everything else are we not?

I'm not condoning keeping these whales in captivity I don't agree with it.

^^ I agree with Meghatronic, just as well blame Rudyard Kipling and his Just so Stories or Winnie the Pooh for exploiting piglet..(maybe thats a private thing!!!)

We are in terms of intelligence and we are at the top of the food chain - that doesn't give us the right to lock animals up or destroy the planet. If anything it should allow us to respect other living things and not lock them away. I might be sounding like abit of a wet blanket here, but back to the main point, if you lock up a wild animal then expect trouble and possible death.

my point exactly, if you imprison an animal and teach it to jump through hoops every day don't be surprised when it decides to eat you... or at the very least bite you.

You make it sound like they are trained to actually jump through hoops. All the Whales do is dive up and back into the water, maybe do a flip. Nothing they can't learn themselves in the wild.

The keepers at a place like Sea World have a lot of respect for the animals they work with and they are well aware of the dangers that are involved in such a job. You are speaking as if they are stupid... if they are at all suprised it will be because they have often known these animals for many years and their usual behaviour doesn't indicate that they will hurt one of their handlers. But my bet is they are constantly aware of the risks.

If they ever grow completely complacent when working with such powerful animals then it is entirely their own fault, but I bet they wouldn't blame the animal.

I swa a documentary the other week, think it might have been on anytime, 'killer' whales beaching themselves to grab seal pups, how the adults teach the young and so forth, absolutely fascintating, also shown how their family bond is for life with different generations staying together for life.... no wonder they get bored in these parks, they are very intelligent and family orientated.

it is a shame this happened but really, apart from sanctuaries for the injured (which again isnt really right as its natures way, survival of the fittest etc etc) there is no need whatsoever for these 'exhibits' to exist except for pure financial gain. I would rather see them on national geo in their natural habitat or if I really felt implored to then pay and go and see them for real, surely thats much more fulfilling experience for people. (I have been lucky to see whales, dolphins, penguins and seals in the wild and it is purely magical)
