If you haven't travelled you don't know jack...

The problem here is people have made the thread about me.

But it is about you.

You've obviously come up with this hypothesis based on how you think you are as a person compared on the people you know who have not travelled.

So yes you're experiences are very important and relevant.

Otherwise this thread would just be

"yes"

"no"

"yes"

"no"

"no"

"yes"

I remember these, they were the freshers in the first few weeks of uni who thought they were above everyone else, with a higher perspective after their 'amaaazing' gap year:
Jumped up 19 year olds who have a couple of deep and meeningfuls on the tourist trail and suddenly become authorities on just about every subject, whilst viewing their well beaten path as unique, are quite annoying.

I think it's worth remembering the phrase: "Wherever you go; there you are."

I have a girl working for me, she's 19 and from a dodgy end of a dodgy UK city.

[...] she then replied
"Why would I want to all that when i've got everything I want here"?
Well indeed. Why should she? Some people are happy with their lot.

My mother's hairdresser has never left Essex, Ipswich is more than enough if she has to leave the village, and the idea of going to London is far too frightening for her.

I think you could argue that people with more wits about them, more curiosity, and more money go see the world more. So travelling or not, this demographic would still be arrogant... :P

One word... "Assumption".

Why don't you want to answer a simple question? It's not like everyone will suddenly just start posting LOL @ SEEK is it?

I think they're already thinking it and the fact that the OP spent the first page criticizing people's responses and calling them trolls says it all really.

I'm gonna spell this out, since so many people are missing the point.

T.H.I.S I.S.N.T A.B.O.U.T M.E P.E.R.S.O.N.A.L.L.Y

Get it yet? :)

Okay, sorry for showing an interest.

Can anyone else who agrees with the sentiment 'if you haven't travelled you don't know jack' tell me about your travels and how they helped you to know jack?

I'm not avoiding a question (in fact I'm not even sure what question you're talking about?). But rather I'm attempting to dodge being the subject matter myself, when the thread topic is (supposedly) about something other than myself.

I'm pretty sure I met Jack in Pompeii, But... It could also of been Bill

Only thing this thread delivers at is making seek look like a ****

Agree or disagree?

People who haven't travelled (beyond their own continent, and not including package holidays) have a narrow perspective and can't possibly understand the bigger picture regarding many aspects of life including cultural/religious/social psychology, love (yes love - how do you know she's 'the one' if you haven't experienced what you consider to be 'love' in a variety of cultures?) and various other aspects of life.

Non-travellers will instantly consider that statement as arrogant of course.

Not trying to be "holier than thou" just interested to see peoples opinion on the matter...

I disagree and I've probably traveled to some further out places than the average South East Asia/Australia gap year person...

You get a better sense of the 'big picture' by reading decent news sources - economist subscription and frequent visits to the bloomberg website will do a lot more for you than 'traveling'.

Traveling is fun, introduces you to people you might not otherwise have encountered and gives you a low level up close look at other countries. It doesn't however give you some vast broad worldly knowledge that other non travelers can't acquire - that's quite frankly BS and will just make you sound like another numpty who 'worked all summer' to fund (about 10%) of the same generic gap year mummy and daddy paid for prior to uni.

Visiting a big rock in Aus, going fruit picking and firing an AK47 at some chickens in Cambodia are not going to do a great deal in terms of your general ability to have an opinion on matters or comment on world events.

I wouldn't say it opened my mind as I would like to think it was always open and receptive to new experiences. What it did taught me was compassion. It just made me realise that people are all the same, regardless of which corners of the world we're from. I've sat around a kitchen table eating dinner with a Polish family in Krakow. That family is now here and part off the hated section of the citizens of this country. They seemed so ... normal. I can't understand why we would hate people that is just like you and me.

I don't actually agree with the statement that you don't know jack. I mean, I've travelled with people that constantly complained about every little thing we experienced or ate in some countries. They usually couldn't wait to 'get out of this dump and back to England'. I think it depends from person to person.

I personally take it further than just travelling and actively campaign at work for assignment opportunities abroad. I've respectively lived in Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and South Africa for a few months at a time working on projects.

My favourite quote on travelling is this.

The world is a book. If you don't travel, you only get to read one page.

You see, personally I'd only make that assumption about people who put-down others without ever even meeting them.

Dude this is the internet. I couldn't give a squat, It still makes you look like one. I didn't say you actually were!

You could have worded the original post better and thought about your replies more I guess, Do you really care though?

"Seeks post seemed to suggest something negative about me! PUT HIM DOWN NAO!!!!!!!!"

And on that note, I'm off. Disregard the actual subject matter and feel free to turn the thread into insults if you like. :)

I disagree with the original post.

Perspective can be broadened with 2nd hand information and further inspected with 1st hand (travelling per say) in certain cases reading about certain cultures will enlighten you a lot more than going to 'said' country and not knowing what the cultures are all about. Such as sayings, beliefs and traditions.

Travelling helps but research is more essential for perspective. People who care not for researching certain cultures then well that's their problem, doesn't mean they're any less intelligent/open minded though.
